FOSTER ME OR ADOPT ME!

Location:      Kansas City
Age:            approx. 1 yr
Temperament:    adorable puppy who's just now learning about toys, LOVES to prance and play with other dogs, still very shy around strangers (is obviously afraid she will be beaten) but coming around!

Gorgeous, petite, starving little ZOEY was cringing in her cage at the pound, curled up in a tight ball and fleeing in fear to the back corner at the slightest hint you were coming her way.  Her fear was tangible and heartbreaking.  We instantly said we'd take her.  We could not let any dog leave this world knowing only abuse.

ZOEY clearly loves other dogs - she follows her foster sisters around, like a tiny puppy learning the ropes.  When she gets going, she loves to jump and prance on them to get them to play with her!  It's a joy to see her open up and be a puppy.  She has just learned about tennis balls but is afraid of squeaky toys, ropes and other toys just yet.

She obviously was used by a backyard breeder to have a litter, then discarded like trash.  She was also obviously abused -- she cringes at human approach and slinks to the ground as if expecting to be hit.

ZOEY only needs patience, time and gentle loving, and she will be an amazing dog.  She is small, beautiful (chestnut red and black), and has a plush coat.  Her coat is already improving and starting to shine.  Her ears had bad fly strike but are starting to heal.  She is getting used to tummy rubs, ear rubs and treats -- and now knows the sound of the treat bag.  She is a smart little girl and will be easily trained once she regains her confidence.  For now, she is very shy of strangers and new situations and will need to be introduced to them slowly and properly.

ZOEY tugs at your heartstrings.  Her story is tragic - only 12 months old and so abused by humans.  But there is a happy ending.  She is going to be a "sleeper" dog - one that emerges from her cocoon and delights you with her joyous personality.

She is eating well and gaining weight, is crate trained, housetrained and has wonderful house manners.  But be prepared for her to chew on shoes and remotes and other things if left around (the foster ruefully found this out).  She's still a puppy and is just learning about such stuff!

ZOEY's ADOPTION FEE:  $300.   This fee covers only a portion of our expenses to vet, heal, board and foster the dogs we save.  It includes spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming and microchip.

TO APPLY:   go to "FORMS" on the left menu, and submit an "Adoption Application"

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
