Location:              Kansas City area
Age:                      approx. 2 yrs

Temperament:    big, goofy, loving, gets along with everyone

PETE is one of 6 German Shepherds we pulled from a high kill pound all at once.   They were all in rough shape, sick with upper respiratory acquired at the pound, and scared to death.  The pound thought PETE was "aggressive", but he was simply scared out of his mind and thought anyone who tried to put a leash on him was going to hurt / euthanize him. Yet at the same time he resisted a leash, he would oh-so-gently take treats and food right out of your hand, and allow you to pet him.  Even as scared as he was, he loved having his (dirty!) ears rubbed.

In a short time PETE adjusted nicely to his boarding situation -- and now that he's in a foster home he's truly blossomed!  He lives with several other GSD's and a cat, and does great with all of them.  He's a lover and adores attention.  He also LOVES to play.  He's good in the house, is housetrained, and for a young man does very well with his general manners.  We have not seen him around children, so that would have to be assessed.

PETE has a fabulous temperament!  He even took with grace the indignity of being entirely shaved when only a small, matted portion of his hind legs was supposed to be shaved.

The only thing PETE's new family will need to deal with is a condition in his front legs that means he will likely be arthritic in both legs.  He began limping, and X-rays showed he's missing a piece of the bone at the elbow that allows the joints to "swivel."  There is no surgery for this, and the vets say it's a matter of two things:  working with PETE on whatever pain meds he may need, and recognizing that he's not a good candidate for heavy-duty physical activity such as daily long runs. He will never be a running dog or a professional frisbee dog.  He loves to play and can certainly do that.  He loves to walk and can certainly do that.  But he will have times when his front legs ache, and he is likely to hold one of them up.  This is NOT a debilitating condition, but it is a condition he will have throughout his life.  It is managed with pain meds and appropriate levels of activity.

PETE is a lovebug you'll fall for instantly when you meet him, will make any family a fabulous companion!

PETE's ADOPTION FEE:  $300.  This fee covers only a portion of what we spend on vetting, healing, boarding and fostering the dogs we save.  It includes spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming and microchip.

TO APPLY:  go to "FORMS" on left hand menu, and submit the "Adoption Application."

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
