ADOPT ME!
Location: Kansas City area
Age: approx. 1-2 yrs
Temperament: strong willed, stubborn, gorgeous, incredibly smart, responsive to training, needs a strong leader and will be a fabulous dog
FRITZ was a starving stray at a high kill MO pound. He's a big beautiful boy who needs a very strong leader -- a young and headstrong German Shepherd who obviously was never taught anything by his former owners (who never bothered to come looking for him).
FRITZ was in an adoptive home but was returned when they pushed him into a high-stress, chaotic situation after just a few weeks. He did remarkably well but made one mistake, which the human involved admitted was her fault. The adopters loved him dearly and felt terrible that they had pushed him too far, too fast.
FRITZ is NOT for beginners and will not be placed with young children. While he will be a wonderful dog, he is a "project" dog and still has lessons to learn that should not be learned with young kids around. He needs a firm, loving, experienced German Shepherd leader. His family MUST be diligent in his training, consistent in applying the rules, and patient in taking his training one step at a time. He has actually made rapid strides in many areas. But as a youngster (still a puppy, just a very large and powerful one!) he is what we call a " serious lunkhead" -- he likes to test and push limits.
Once trained and past his puppyhood willfulness, FRITZ will be the most loyal and wonderful of companions. He is already beginning to show a "puppy" side - he steals the soap from the shower and merrily leads his humans on a chase around the house to get it. He steals the dishtowel from the refrigerator. We're delighted to see this side of him - it's clear he didn't have much of a puppyhood. HOWEVER, at the same time as he is so charming and puppylike, he still is a "serious" dog with serious lessons to learn. Whatever his prior life was, it's clear he never had any leadership and picked up some bad habits, such as growling at you if he doesn't like something. He is slowly un-learning these habits but it will take some time.
FRITZ does well with the small dog in the foster home, and is playing with the female German Shepherds. He and the other male German Shepherd still don't like each other. He ignores the cat but would clearly give chase if the cat ran, so will require very strong continued leadership and training with a cat.
FRITZ adores ice cubes and will sit by your side waiting patiently for just one when you go to the freezer. He loves to play ball and can play for hours. He wants to know where you are and will keep a close, protective eye on the family.
FRITZ needs a home without small children (too large, powerful, energetic, and lunkheaded). His forever home MUST be highly active and willing to give him a lot of love, exercise and appropriate discipline.
He's a stunner who deserves a GREAT furever home!
