Meet Bud

ADOPT ME!

Foster Update:  1/26/2010:
Bud has been with me for two weeks now and he has been a terrific guest. I cannot believe this dog isn't 3 or 4 years old. He is so playful and has a terrific sense of humor. He likes to bury his bone outside. I don't want him to do that so he chats with me about it. When finally he realizes I am serious he goes over to the corner in the basment, lightly scratches the rug  and deposits the bone exactly in the corner than looks at me as though to say " there are you happy now?

I brought one of my females down to see him who has the best calming signals I have ever seen in a dog. Bud circled her sniffing her her very intensly. She laid down, he laid down then gently put his paw on hers with a little" woof." It was very sweet.  He is much more active with my male who is fairly submissive and it makes me think he would do best with a female or as an only dog. He loves to have his ears scratched gently and moans when you do it-It is hysterical! Oh and scratch that chest and his life is perfect-well a nice walk and a rawhide completes the bliss.

This is a happy dog, protective of his home but gentle with his people and to me embodies the best of the breed. He is loyal, playful, good natured and very obediant. He will be an amazing companion for his next owner and I will miss him dearly when that time comes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Buddy is another casualty of the recession. His owner lost his job and is losing his home and couldn’t keep Buddy any longer. Buddy has been very well cared for and is in excellent condition and health. He is a big boy haven’t weighed him yet but I would guess 70 lbs or more. He is obedience trained and took immediately to the Gentle Leader I used on walking with him as his owner said at times he could pull. He walked beautifully beside me with no problems. He has a terrific sit, lie down, and recall. He needs a little work on his stay. He absolutely loves fetch and you would never guess from his behavior that he just turned 8 as he is playful and energetic. He is also a very affectionate dog. His owner indicates he has gotten along with other dogs that have visited and also done well with kids. He notes he has never bothered the cats at the vets. He is friendly to people but protective at home until he is told a stranger is acceptable. He is used to long walks with his owner which is probably part of his excellent condition. He has never tried to escape his fenced yard. I haven’t yet exposed him to my three Border collies or my cat so in the next week or so after he has an opportunity to adjust more. He is housetrained but hasn’t been crate trained. His owner reports his house manners are impeccable. He likes to be near a human when fireworks or storms occur but does not get unduly frightened. He is uptd on his shots and has been neutered. He a purebred and has been registered with the AKC.

I think this guy would make an ideal companion for someone who is used to a well behaved GSD who has the time to really bond with him. He really loves to spend time with his person or people whether it is playing fetch, taking long walks or just hanging out. He is used to being in the house and sleeping in his owner's bedroom at night.

A WORD ABOUT OUR SENIOR GERMAN SHEPHERDS

If you can find a place in your heart for a senior, you're in for the best few years of your life! German shepherds are one of the most intelligent, loyal and loving breeds around -- and seniors are the wise men of the Germman Shepherd breed. It takes a very special person to foster or adopt a senior dog. It takes a selfless family that's willing to share their lives with this golden boy for the next few years. That's willing to spoil him rotten in his retirement years. That accepts the fact he won't romp in a field with you or endlessly chase the ball. No, he'll sit at your feet and love you and protect you. He'll keep his eye out for anything that's not quite right in your household. He'll be the mature, calm, loyal guardian and companion most people long for. And he'll give you a love so deep you'll never regret the shortened years with your family. Each day will be precious.

More about Bud

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
