Hazel Grace came to MOGS severely neglected via a southern Missouri animal control agency. She was owner-surrendered to avoid cruelty charges. All that is behind her now, she is a gentle and sweet senior girl who loves Cheez-its and is looking for her loving forever home!

TEMPERAMENT/BEHAVIOR

After enduring most likely years of neglect, Hazel Grace is thoroughly enjoying a comfy life in her foster home. She loves laying on anything soft and prefers to come back inside immediately after going potty instead of staying out in the heat or rain…unless she has another dog to play with in the yard. She absolutely loves freeze dried liver treats and white cheddar Cheez-its.

She will bark a lot at the neighbors’ dogs through the fence, but she is working on this. She will easily go in her kennel for meals, but she does not like staying in her kennel very long. She has done a little counter surfing, snagging a box of those white cheddar Cheez-its, so now her foster mom keeps things off the counter. She is not a happy camper at the vet and the vet has determined she needs to be muzzled there. She is currently working on her leash manners; she heels nicely and walks with a loose leash when we walk her by herself, but she will pull and try to be in the lead when walking with the other dogs.

TRAINING

Hazel Grace goes right in her kennel when you tell her to, but she gets loud if she has to stay very long. Her foster mom is working through this by increasing the time she must stay in her kennel. She is working on improving walks with the other dogs. She is also working on doing sit on command. She is housebroken and will come up and paw you or go to the door when she needs to go out.

PEOPLE

Hazel Grace is very comfortable when introduced to women, she is a little reluctant around men at first but warms up to them in a few minutes. She has been excellent with her 9-year-old human foster sibling, but so far this is the only child she has been introduced to. She has barked at the workers in her foster home, but not to excess.

OTHER ANIMALS

Hazel Grace is cat friendly and leaves the cat alone. They will peacefully lay around in the same room and she does not chase. Hazel Grace would really enjoy another dog to play with. She has initiated play with her 13-year-old foster sister as well as her 8-week-old corgi foster sister! She loves playing with the puppy and is very careful not to be too rough since this puppy is much smaller than she is. When she is done playing, she slowly gets up and walks away, careful not to step on puppy.

MEDICAL

Hazel Grace has hypothyroidism and will need daily medication for the rest of her life. She is experiencing some hair loss from hypothyroidism and her fur is growing back, but very slowly. She is also currently being treated for bilateral ear infections.

HAZEL GRACE'S ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

1. We're picky about our adopters. 
2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.  
   
3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
   
5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up? 
   
6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
