2/14/10:
Doogan is a sweet 35 lb shepherd mix boy.  He likely has more Aussie shep in him rather than German, in addition to some terrier we think.  Overall, he's a cream color with bits of brown and black patches on his sides and back.  The ears are so cute - semi-flopped, and he has the prettiest brown eyes and an unusual brown spotted nose.  He's shy, but once he gets to know you, he warms up.  He's a really great size, and would even be fine in an apartment as long as he was walked daily.  He would do best in a quieter home with a single person or couple without children.  An older couple would be ideal as would a home with another dog for him to pack with.  He wants so badly to fit in with the pack, and is doing great with his foster mom and foster siblings, which include 2 dogs twice his size and cats.

Doogan is pretty low maintenance and is happy just to curl up at your feet and not make a sound. He is housebroken, and his foster mom has started giving him free run of the home upon leaving without incident.  He doesn't chew, dump trash, get on on furniture, or bark without reason.  He is, in fact, a good little watch dog that alerts and keeps alerting when a stranger approaches, but stops as appropriate.  He is getting used to most of his foster mom's visitors, although he won't quite take treats from them yet.

Doogan has learned down and to sit, including for his food and at the door wanting out.  He also knows shake and his foster mom is teaching him right and left.  He's very smart and food motivated, so should continue to do fine with a good leader.  A class situation might intimidate him, but in time, he may come out of his shell fully.  At first he didn't even know what treats and rawhides were, but now trembles with excitement over getting them.  He never even picked up a toy until about a week ago.  His foster mom would see him thinking about it, but then he wouldn't do it until recently, when he quietly squeaked a toy a couple times.

Overall, Doogan is a very nice, lovely boy, who just needs a gentle hand and quiet home.  He will give you LOTS of unconditional love in return.  Please fill out an application for him today!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
