Background

Harley is a goofy, young GSD! She is energetic with a high toy drive. She loves balls, mile long walks, and outdoor playtime. Harley loves new people and is very warm and welcoming to everyone.

Temperment/Behavioral

Harley has made tremendous progress in the last few months. She walks on a leash well with an alternative collar. (She is still practicing her manners a little bit on a regular leash and collar.) She can walk even with other dogs in the area. She will occasionally bark but has not shown aggressiveness towards other dogs. Harley still acts like a puppy, so she is learning jumping manners. Potential adopters will need to understand that she will need to continue working on the jumping on people. She is doing well
on basic commands like “sit” but struggles when she is excited. She is treat motivated and trains easily, she also comes when called (unless there is a major distraction like another dog). She is crate trained and house broken. When she first comes out of the crate, she can be very excited but after a few minutes she will calm down. Harley
loves cuddling and will happily lay with her people at any time. Slow introductions are a good idea for her. Harley has high anxiety and with both exercise and the right medication it is decreased significantly.

Harley NEEDS a home willing to spend actual time with her outside to run off her energy. Her foster family works outside the home M-F so she is manageable in a working household but needs some exercise each day. Her ideal home needs to be active or at least willing to walk her daily. Harley is very smart and is learning training and commands quickly. She goes in a crate well and is potty trained. She does not have any issues with chewing things up or getting into things, she really is a big goofy lover who gives sloppy kisses.

Other Animals

Harley does great with other dogs and is currently in a foster home with a 5-year-old female GSD and they got along from the first minute. Harley loves being with another dog, she just needs appropriate introductions (as most dogs do). Cat are unknown, and have not been tested.

Children/People

Harley loves all people as mentioned above. When people are visiting, she will engage with them. She has been introduced to teenagers and adults and really enjoys everyone. Caution will need to be used with small children until her jumping is resolved. Harley likes to be near her human if they are home. She will follow her humans around the house.

Medical

Harley is up-to-date on vaccines, has a current rabies tag, is spayed, and microchipped.

Harley has had all four canines extracted due to unknown issues in a prior adoptive home leading to multiple fractured teeth.

DOGS:    Harley is good with other dogs, with slow introductions. She has a hard play style, so needs a dog the same size, energy and play style

CATS:  Not tested

KIDS:  Harley has been around kids and teenagers of all sizes with no issues other than jumping

IDEAL FAMILY: Harley NEEDS a home willing to spend actual time with her outside to run off her energy. Her ideal home needs to be active or at least willing to walk her daily. Harley is very smart and is learning training and commands quickly. She goes in a crate well and is potty trained.

HARLEY'S ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Harley

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
