Foster update:

Sid is 110 lb lap dog.  He is so sweet to people, he loves to lean into you for an ear scratch or a tummy rub.  He knows the furniture he is allowed on at my house, and stays off restricted pieces… he loves to lay on the couch with his head on your lap for movies, such a snug bug.  He is housetrained and knows how to ring the bells or nose the door knob to ask to go out.  He has been taught to sit before he is leashed for walks, fed, or let outside for potty time - he has the ‘house rules’ down pat now.  If you teach it to him he will do his best to obey... very willing, but enthusiastic.

He would really thrive with an obedience class upon adoption.  We’re still working on leash manners (he’s good with the pinch-collar, we just want to get him to where he never needs it… but he’s a strong boy!), and continued socialization.    Sid is growly about other dogs (read:  not dog park material).  However, he has done really well visiting pet stores and events that include other dogs, I think he just needs more confidence in those situations and an aware handler.  He would probably do well as an only family dog, or in a household with other dogs if personalities mesh - he would love to be adopted with Cady!  He likes children and men.  Sid’s cool with the vacuum and his crate, he will often choose to sleep in his crate/den.

I have not tested him with cats, he does like to chase squirrels, but if properly introduced and taught the rules, he may be fine with cats.  He has done very well with the 5 lb toy poodles he sees often, but is not left unsupervised with them either.  Sid is a bit of a worrier, and it took some adjustment time to see his real personality – and he is just awesome now!  Everyone who meets him LOVES him.  He is the alpha with other dogs, but has been pretty easy to correct on ‘acceptable alpha behavior’ – he’s learning not to be toy possessive and how not to play too rough.  His foster sister Cady is smaller at 65 lbs and they play together wonderfully – he lets her tell him off on occasion and they take turns being the ‘aggressor’ in play.  She adores his company.  He didn’t play at all when he first came, but now he plays like a puppy and is so happy.  He’s at a great healthy weight now and his coat is shining again.  Sid thinks life is good, but it would be even better if he had his own forever family.

SID was found wandering near a major highway by a nice lady who took him in. Sid was GREAT with 9 and 11 yr old kids in the house, great with all the people, men and women both. Sid is a great dog, but is a dominate male. He would get along with female dogs, and be okay with males as long as they are submissive to him. He needs a leader who will let him know his boundaries. He's a big boy, nearly 28 inches tall, but is very sweet and rides well in a car.

Sid's adoption fee is $300.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
