Foster home update:
Jackson is a beautiful hunk of 3 years (in Nov) who is going through stages of puppyhood. He is used to barreling through anything and over anybody, and is slowly learning that this is not acceptable. Rules of the house are not to run into the senior female GSD and knocking her off her feet, not to beat anybody down the staircase or to the back door, not beating everybody through the door, sitting and waiting until the food bowl comes down, being outside the kitchen when meals are prepared (human and dog food), and the fact that nobody around here wants to play all the time (that includes dogs and humans), resident female dogs do not appreciate rough housing, and there are rules for playing as well. Standing on your hind legs to look a human straight in the eye to get his attention is not well received either (aka, jumping up, but he usually doesn't put his paws on you) Oh yes, paws get wiped clean before you come in the house when the weather is nasty. A lot to learn for any dog, but Jackson has made quite a bit of progress and is doing very well, as long as he can remember to keep his exuberance under control.
Jackson has been going to obedience classes for the last two weeks, and is doing surprisingly well. We are working on heeling, sit, down, come, and starting on commands like stay and leave it. I have been taking him to the agility course as well, and this boy was born for this dog sport. The A-frame was a breeze after the third time over, and last week we started on the dog walk. I have not tried formal tracking with him yet, but from what I have seen so far, he will be doing great.
Jackson is a dog who thrives on "work", whether that be obedience, agility, tracking, flyball, or all four combined. He is easy to train, and has good food drive and even better ball/toy drive. He is very athletic, and not only fast, but quick!
Jackson should not go to a home with small children, teenage children are ok. He has been around a 14 yr old girl, and was fine. He should be under close supervision around smaller children, if just for his exuberance, and his inexperience with them. He is doing well with female dogs, and I have seen mixed results around male dogs. I have been visiting friends with a male GSD (who is not fond of other males either), and he can ignore the other male, but again, close supervision is necessary.
Jackson needs an owner who can set rules for him, and enforce them in the correct way. He needs an active household, and preferrably somebody who is looking for a dog for dog sports and obedience. Jackson is smart, and will learn fast, and bond closely to his owner without being overly clingy. He is a diamond in the rough, and if you are willing to take the time to polish him into the jewel that he can be, please fill out an application.

Jackson needs a lot of socialization. He is very uncomfortable around children and should not be adopted to any family with a child under the age of 12. He seems to be O.K. with other dogs.

Jackson's adoption fee is $300.

More about Jackson

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
