GILDA
is a petite GSD with the spirit of a queen!

BACKGROUND
Gilda was dropped off at a shelter by a person who claimed she was a stray.

TEMPERAMENT
Part super loving with equal part just plain goofy, with a healthy dash of warmth and soulful eyes thrown in.  There are some dogs who just make you smile -- and that's Gilda.  She adores people, adores atention, adores life!  It's fun just watching her race around and enjoy the playyard at her boarding kennel.  She's VERY fast and would make a great agility dog, disc dog, etc.  Absent a 'regular job' like that, she needs daily exercise and play time to wear her out so she can snuggle with you.

PEOPLE
Loves people and gets excited for attention from anyone she meets.  Both at the shelter and in boarding she's eager to greet everyone.  We haven't had the chance to test her around kids yet, but we suggest kids 12 and up simply due to her energy level.  Has not shown any negative reactions to humans to date.

OTHER DOGS
Gilda was dog tested at the shelter and did fine one on one. When put in a medium-sized pack she got a bit pushy, as if either policing or herding the other dogs and nipping at their butts.  We don't know if that's a natural herding/motherly behavior, if she's unsure being in a group of dogs (may never have been in one before), if she's trying to be somewhat dominant, or maybe some combination of all of those. However, she's a smart cookie and with good leadership we think she would do fine with most other dogs.  She has not been tested around small dogs or cats yet.

HOUSE MANNERS
Unknown.  She's currently in boarding due to lack qualified foster homes and we haven't seen her in a home setting.  She keeps her run clean at boarding so has clearly been in a home and is used to pottying outside.  She may occasionally get the zoomies if not exercised sufficiently, but we don't know if she would try to get into trash or other typical dog behaviors.

TRAINING
Smart, smart, smart lady!  It appears she'll respond well to training and leadership -- she wants to please and is super smart.  Has some barrier reactivity in the kennel, and some leash reactivity to other dogs, but once she blows some energy she listens pretty well.

ENERGY LEVEL
High.  Gets in the play yard at boarding and runs like the wind, just happy to be alive.  Since she's currently in boarding, it's tough to tell how much that will calm down once she's in a home with a regular schedule, regular exercise, and lots of love and attention.  She ADORES people and attention, so we suspect that once she settles into a home and a routine with rules, she'll be calmer in a home than she is in boarding.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADOPTION
Gilda definitely needs a fenced yard, preferably at least 5' high.  She also needs an active family who will get out in the yard daily and play with her, then cuddle and snuggle.  She can be an only dog, or live with another dog who will accept her queenly ways and high energy.

If you're looking for a beautiful, loving, trainable German Shepherd
to love and snuggle forever, and are an active family,
GILDA may be your new BFF!

GILDA's ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
