BEAR
is a big, handsome dude who draws you right to him with those soulful eyes and happy energy – and he’s looking for a forever family to love and be loved by!

BACKGROUND
Stray at a local shelter.  Had an up-to-date microchip and the owner was contacted.  wanted to reclaim him but refused to pay the fees and refused to participate in the free-reclaim program because it requires the dog to be fixed.  . The shelter gave the owner two options: they would return Bear home with no fines or boarding fees required if the owner consented to letting them neuter Bear, or the owner could pay fees and decline the neuter.  The owner laughed and said forget it, keep him == and cheerfully abandoned Bear at the shelter.  So after sitting out his mandatory hold time, he joined us at MOGS

He Has fly-strike on his ears so clearly spent a lot of his time outdoors, if not all of it.  Was also super skinny with all ribs showing when he arrived.

PERSONALITY
Bear’s a loving guy who likes to sit at your feet and get belly or ear rubs.  He adores attention!  At events we’ve taken him to, he’s settled down at the handler’s feet and nearly fallen asleep.  Yet he has good energy and loves going for walks, loves playing with a Jolly ball in the playyard, and is always interested in what the other dogs are doing.  We have the sense that he was an only dog, most likely kept in a backyard by himself, and that he’s really interested in this experience he’s having. To meet him is to love him --  he’s just that kinda guy ;-)

HOUSE MANNERS
He’s in boarding due to lack of available foster homes and a literal epidemic of homeless/dumped GSDs, so we have not seen him in a home environment.  He keeps a clean kennel in the boarding facility, and loves his raised bed.  It’s possible that he would have some typical new-dog-in-the-house behaviors, like getting into trash etc, but our best guess based on his behavior with our volunteers who are there multiple times a day, and his behavior at events we’ve taken him to, is that he would do well in the house.  He’s old enough to be past crazy-puppy stage, and young enough to have a good energy without being over the top.

PEOPLE
Bear has loved all the people he’s met, at the shelter, in boarding, and at events we’ve had him at.  He’s met kids at the events and has done well with them.

OTHER ANIMALS
On initial dog testing at the shelter, Bear just wanted to avoid other dogs. At events, he’s wanted to meet other well-behaved dogs and done fine with them.  He does not like other dogs who get in his face or are dominant, and will react to them.  Cats are unknown and would have to be tested.

TRAINING
He’s a smart cookie and wants to please you.  Even in boarding, he’s been learning basic commands like sit, and wait before exiting a kennel or building door.  He’s a true GSD personality – a bit headstrong sometimes but a fast learner!  We think training him to your household rules will take pretty minimal effort and he’ll be a pleasure to train.

HEALTH
No known health issues.  Neutered, up to date on shots, on monthly preventives, heartworm negative and ready to get on with a happy life!!

One lucky family is going to be able to love Bear and be loved by him!  Is that YOU?  Apply today!

If you're looking for a big, handsome German Shepherd
to love you forever,
BEAR may be your new BFF!

BEAR'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350

This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Bear

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
