PIPER is a gorgeous young sable German Shepherd who's having a blast in her foster home and is really, really eager to find her forever family and get settled in!

BACKGROUND
Piper was part of a 10-dog rescue from a small rural puppy miller.  She had gotten all the dogs off Craig's List or Facebook for free or cheap, and proceeded to use them to pump out puppies for profit.  Unfortunately, she didn't take care of them.  They had massive flea infestations (to the point where one dog was nearly hairless).  She also rarely fed them, and all the dogs were literally skin and bones.   We even saw some of the dogs fighting over ..... are you ready? ..... a mesh bag of ONIONS!!!  She told us they fed the 13 dogs on the property once a week.  And they didn't understand why we were appalled. It made us sick with sadness.  The dogs were filthy, living in high weeds, miserable with itching, rarely fed, and constantly bred.  Shots and vet attention were non-existent.  So was kindness.

TEMPERAMENT
Despite the hell she endured, she's sweet, loving, and "a well-mannered little lady" (to quote her foster mom).  She's kind of petite, still a fairly energetic youngster, and is learning all kinds of things.  She's now house trained, kennel trained, waits poilitely for treats, and gets along with just about everybody and everything - all animals and most humans.   She's a little scared of her middle-aged foster dad, but is working on that with frequent brushings and love-ins.  She's great with kids, dogs, cats, even chickens.  Her message to you is: "If you're looking for a sweet, loyal girl I'm your lady!"

PEOPLE
Loves people overall.  Adores her 12-yr-old human foster boy, her foster grandpa and grandma, her foster mom and others.  She's still warming up to her foster dad and will need some time to acclimate to middle-aged men.  But she's just shy of them, no aggression.  With continued socialization and exposure, she'll come out of this last remaining part of her shell!

OTHER ANIMALS
Loves playing with her doggie foster siblings and must live with another dog to continue developing her confidence!  She's also around cats and chickens, and does fine. She's also been around a 10 lb dog and does fine. She lived in an outdoor 'pack' of 10 GSDs and several smaller dogs, so is well used to being around multiple other dogs.

ENERGY LEVEL
Medium to high.  She's still a youngster and loves to play with her doggie foster siblings and her human boy.  But she also does well in the house and can settle.

TRAINING
Smart and learns well.  She just needs consistency and continued work on things like leash manners.  She wasn't taught anything in her prior life, so she started from scratch with us and we're proud of her progress.  She now knows sit and come, and is working on other commands.  With your leadership and consistency, she'll blossom fully into the wonderful dog she really is!

HEALTH
Spayed, current on all shots, microchipped, on monthly preventives -- and ready to go home!  No known health issues.

REQUIREMENTS
Must have a securely fenced yard (5-6' strongly preferred).  MUST also have a doggie buddy of roughly her own size and play energy/style. Her new doggie sibling must be pretty well-behaved so s/he can be a role model as she continues to learn how to be an indoor, loved dog and what is expected of her.  She can NOT be an only dog.

SUMMARY
Piper is a gem of a girl -- a diamond that just needs a little more polishing to be darn near perfect.  She loves other animals (dogs / cats / chickens), loves people (still a little shy of her foster dad but working on it and improving), loves kids (12-yr-old human boy), loves grandparents (adores her human foster grandpa), loves to play, is well behaved.  All that and GORGEOUS to boot! What's not to love about this sweet, beautiful girl?  Despite the hell she was forced to live in, she loves life and will brighten up your life every day ;-)

Looking for a stunning, young, goofy, trainable German Shepherd to love you forever?
You've gotta meet PIPER!

PIPER'S ADOPTION FEE:   $400
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
