SAMMIE is a beautiful girl who's ready for a life indoors as a beloved companion and family member!  After l iving outside her whole life, she just wants to snuggle with you and love on you.  She's a true GSD who also craves your attention and affection.  She's currently in boarding due to lack of qualified foster homes, and desperately needs either a foster or adoptive home ASAP!

BACKGROUND
Stray at a large shelter.  Found wandering in a bad area of town and was literally starving.  About 20 lbs underweight.  Had significant fly strike on her ears (see photo) and is heartworm positive, so was likely an outdoor dog all her life.

TEMPERAMENT
A lover, cuddlebug and snuggler who would gladly climb up in your lap if allowed!  Sammie ADORES attention and belly rubs!  She'll go into the playyard at boarding and often instead of running around she'll stay with you for cuddle time.  If she's at the other side of the yard and you call her, she'll come barreling right at you and, just as you think she's going to wham right into you, she plops down on the ground with her belly in the air asking for a belly rub.  She tolerates other dogs, and has gone on walks with them at boarding but with some small separattion in between them.  She's also a foodie and loves her food and treats (working on 'sit' for dinner).

PEOPLE
She's a people person, er, dog!  Def-i-nite-ly!  Attention, affection, pets, rubs, scratches, toy play - you name it and she likes it.  KIDS:  we haven't been able to test her around kids yet but we believe she'd do well aside from her size and strength.  Like any large, strong dog, she can accidentally knock a child over in play or even just in running around.  STRANGERS:  to date she has not reacted negatively to any person she's met, including those who approach her kennel.  She is kennel trained and keeps a perfectly clean kennel in boarding (may need some refreshers during the transition into a home).

OTHER ANIMALS
When tested at the shelter in a yard with other dogs, she wanted to avoid them.  In boarding, she tolerates the other dogs and loves to watch them, apparently fascinated by whatever they're doing.  She will pull some on the leash when out walking and sees another dog but corrects well.  Cats have not been tested yet.

TRAINING
She has learned a few commands such as 'sit,' and does fairly well on a leash walk.  However, she clearly has not been trained to do much of anything and she needs consistent reinforcement to do the things she's learned in her time with us.  She's a smart girl, and just needs a good leader who will set rules and boundaries, consistently enforce them, and educate her on what is acceptable and not acceptable.  In 6 months time, with strong, consistent leadership and rules, she'll be a marvelous dog.

ENERGY LEVEL
Medium with an occasional burst of higher.  She runs beautifully but seems to prefer being where you are.  On leash she'll pull some, and only gets worse when she sees another dog and wants to go meet.  She's a great age -- no more pschyo-puppy energy but still full of life and love. And she's experiencing an entirely new world since coming to us.  With regular daily exercise, a daily schedule/routine, and strong leadership, she's going to blossom from a good dog to a great dog.

MEDICAL
Spayed, up to date on shots, microchipped, successfully completed heartworm treatment and is rarin' to find her very own famiy and home!

SUMMARY
Sammie is a big, gorgeous girl who had a lousy life before and is now thrilled to be an indoor dog with plenty of ood, water, and soft bedding.  She ADORES attention and affection, both getting it and giving it.  She's learned a few manners even though she's in boarding, and is a smart cookie who will learn fast what your rules and boundaries are.  She's probably best as an only pet right now, but might be able to live with another dog who's calm and submissive.  She must have a securely fenced yard -- prefer 5' or higher -- and can force her way out of a weak area in a gate or fence panel, so the fence must be solid and well secured.  Sammie is the biggest lovebug ever and is going to make one lucky family think they've hit the jackpot!  Is that lucky family YOU?

If you're looking for a gorgeous, smart, trainable German Shepherd
to be your new BFF,
SAMMIE's your girl!

SAMMIE'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
