CHEWIE is a young, gorgous bi-color German Shepherd who's a ball of energy and super loving!  He's looking for a special family to to give him the love, fun and activity he craves!

BACKGROUND:  Chewie was an only dog until about 9 months old, when his family decided they didn't want him anymore and gave him to another family member.  There he lived for just under 2 yrs, with two adult humans and a 110 lb GSD brother (Louie, also in our MOGS program).   So at just 2.5 yrs old, Chewie is looking for his third -- AND FINAL! -- family and home.  His owners split up, he and his brother stayed with one owner, that owner became seriously ill, went to live with a family member and couldn't take the dogs with him.  We were contacted just 2 days before the owner moved out of state and went into emergency mode to get the boys safe!

TEMPERAMENT:  Chewie is goofy, rambunctious and has tons of energy.  He's a 'busy' boy and would love a job.  He's also loving, funny, a doggie playboy who just wants to enjoy life to the fullest.  Our evaluator was sitting in a chair on the owner's deck when Chewie came bounding out the door, over to her, jumped on her in greeting with kisses (did we mention he needs some manners?), then promptly bounded off into the yard in search of his toys.  He periodically returned to say hi, give a few kisses, and then back to his play.   It's clear that the owners didn't have many visitors to the house, weren't active, and didn't take him on walks or outings to pet stores or anywhere else.  They did report going on a few camping trips but it appears their trips outside the house/yard were limited to those few trips.  He needs work on his leash manners, and manners in general.  He knows some basic commands but clearly hadn't been asked to do them in a long time and gets easily distracted -- a typical untrained GSD youngster.  He's going to make someone a wonderful buddy with training, consistency and leadership.  He seems to love everyone, human and dog, and isn't afraid of anything.  Oh and he loves water and playing in the doggie pool during playgroups.  He's almost OCD about his toys and play -- he gets very focused on it and largely ignores the other activities around him.  He's slowly getting better about that, and with a balanced, active family who spends time with him, he'll continue to get better.

PEOPLE:  He's pretty much a goofball and greeted our evaluator by jumping on her with a big smile.  He just wanted to play and party!  He promptly ran off to the yard and started rolling around his favorite toy -- a huge rubber basket that he threw in the air and rolled around.  He eventually started  playing chase with his housemate Louie, and every time he came on the deck he was super friendly to our evaluator.  He appears to love all people and think eeryone should be his playmate.     KIDS:  he's never lived with kids, and at this time we recommend older kids (15 and up) simply due to his rambunctiousness and lack of manners.

OTHER ANIMALS:  He lived with a 110 lb GSD male, and is in playgroups at the boarding facility.  He adores the play groups and is out with a large group of similar sized dogs several times a day, running, pllaying, splashing, and having a doggie party.  The owner reported he'd never shown any aggression to other dogs, such as when the owners went on camping trips.  Chewie's only issue with other dogs is just that he's so excited and rambunctious that he wants to get rowdy at first meeting -- he still needs to learn a few doggie manners.

HOUSE MANNERS:
He seems to have decent house manners, but we say this only from a brief observation of him in the owner's home.  He's currently in boarding, due to lack of available qualified foster homes, so we haven't observed his house manners for more than an hour at the owner's home. He was an indoor dog, slept on he owner's bed curled up with his brother, and appears to be house trained.  After being in boarding he may need a refresher on that but should remember quickly.  Aside from having a lot of pent-up energy from being alone for months, he reportedly does well in the hosue.

HEALTH:
He's neutered, microchipped, up to date on shots. No known health conditions.

TRAINING:  This is the most important thing he needs.  The prior owners taught him a couple of basic commands like 'sit' and 'down', but didn't use the commands often and later not at all.  With the owner being ill and in-out of hospital, he was on his own with his brother most of the time.  He's in need of structure, boundaries, rules, and consistent leadership.  The manger at his boarding faciity is a professional trainer and a GSD person, and she reports that he's extremely smart, very responsive, and listens well.  She thinks he would thrive with a job to do -- he has high energy/drive combined with his intelligence and doesn't appear to be afraid of anything.  He loves humans and other dogs, and she thinks he will take well and quickly to training, would be an excellent agility or other high-activity dog.

OVERALL:  He's a stunningly handsome dog with the brains to match.  Combine that with his high energy, and you've got a magnificent example of some of the best of German Shepherd traits.    The owners had good intentions but didn't get him out much and the last few months in his home  were very chaotic.  So he's had a lot of adjustments to make in the last monthss, and a lot to deal with.  He's been separated from almost everything that's familiar to him -- and is actually proving pretty adaptable.  He's an energetic, young, mostly-untrained boy who just needs structure, exercise and consistent leadership.  He also needs to be in a foster or adoptive home ASAP!  Cheiwie is the rowdy youngster who just wants to have fun!

WHAT CHEWIE NEEDS FROM A NEW FAMILY:  If you're looking for a loving, goofy, young dynamo, and are a very active family with a securely fenced yard, have older kids or no kids, and are an experienced GSD handler with the desire and skill to train Chewie---- you're going to have a truly incredible best buddy for life!

CHEWIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $550 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
