STEWART is a handsome guy with a lot of presence and pizzazz -- and he's eagerly waiting for a loving home and family!! He's desperate to get into a home and out of boarding, where he is staying due to lack of qualified foster homes.

BACKGROUND:  Stewart was a stray at a shelter and is an odd mixture of signs that he was indoor dog.  He refuses to potty in his kennel run, even an outdoor run he sometimes spends a few hours in.  Yet he's heartworm positive, which is more typical of outdoor dogs.  He may have been a loved pet but lived in a neighborhood where people commonly do not give heartworm preventives.

TEMPERAMENT:  Stewie has a very good temperament in general, and we use him to walk with other dogs in boarding because he does well with both males and females -- and tends to ignore them and mostly concentrate on sniffing.  He's a confident dog and can be GSD-stubborn -- when he finds a really interesting smell we have to pull him away.  Our educated guess is that he lived with someone (perhaps older) who didn't have many rules or boundaries, and Stewart was allowed to do what he wanted.  However, he does want to please you and loves attention so with good leadership he will respond.  He's also a chow hound!  We think he might be very good at finding any food left out in the house.  He's definnitely a sniffer, and walks with his nose to the ground most of the time.

PEOPLE:  He loves people, and has been excellent with everyone he's met so far.  He doesn't have any barrier reactivity when meetng new people, and accepts them easily.  KIDS:  we haven't seen him around kids and would need to test that.  We suspect he'd do well, although would probably steal any food in small hands!

OTHER ANIMALS:  A mixed bag. We recommend an ONLY PET HOME.  He tested well with other dogs at the shelter (mostly ignored them) and in boarding we used him to walk with other dogs. BUT when we took him into a yard with a submissive female GSD he lunged at her for no discernible  reason.  No damage was done and we separated them (using their leashes), but he meant business.  We've just temp tested him with another large male GSD and he did ok until the other dog got closer.  If we had not had Stewie in complete control (collar and muzzle), we believe he would have gone after the other dog.  He's not natively aggressive to other animals because he doesn't fixate on other dogs and try to get at them if they're on leash and at a little distance.  It almost appears to be a complete and total lack of socialization and familiarity with other dogs, but his reaction is to go after them instead of back off.

SO WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND AN ONLY PET HOME.  If a qualified adopter has the time and ability to work with him every day and gradually socialize him with another dog, we will consider it.  Absent that, Stewie has to go to an only pet home where he will not be free around other dogs.
WALKS:  he's good on leash walks with other dogs and we've walked him many times with one or two other dogs, though they seldom touch.

CATS:  we tested him with a cat who was in a wire kennel and when the cat hissed, Stewie jumped back wanting to get away.  He MAY be trainable with cats.  But he will probably chase a free-roaming cat.

SMALL ANIMALS: is interested in small critters on walks, and sometimes has to be pulled away from what appear to be nests or other items of interest.

TRAINING: Stewie is a true GSD -- strong willed and stubborn, yet super loving and sweet.  He was clearly never taught anything by his previous owner -- it appears he was loved but had no leadership, doing his own thing and is simply not used to a human giving rules.  Once you get his attention, he does want to please you and is surprised.  He needs a family who will help him understand the rules of the house and hold him to them.

HEALTH:
S  No known medical conditions.  He's neutered, up to date on shots, and microhipped.  He's currently being treated for heartworm.

OVERALL:  He's a great dog with a confident, loving personality -- kind of a ''cool dude".  He's not confused like many dogs, but is curious about everything and wanting out of his kennel run at boarding.  He's independent but loving, confident but loving, stubborn but receptive.  In other words, he's a doll!  He'll be a great only dog or could possibly live with a non-dominant dog.  He's nobody's fool and is a true GSD.

WHAT HE NEEDS IN HIS NEW FAMILY:  A securely fenced yard, rules and consistency in enforcing them, lots of love!  He's moderately active and loves walks, so needs a decent level of daily activity.  May be best as an only dog and could potentially live with cats.

Looking for a handsome and trainable German Shepherd
who really enjoys life but is past the crazy-puppy stage?
STEWART might be your new BFF!

STEWART's ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Stewart

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
