About Sheba | |
|
|
SHEBA is a standard-sized and classically beautiful GSD girl who's lived with her brother Rico all her life, and is bonded to him. She's a sweetheart and we're hoping her new family will adopt this beautiful bonded pair together!
BACKGROUND
Sheba and her brother Rico were abandoned together on the side of a road. The young owner's family had to leave their rental house after it was sold, and had tried to get the "twins" into a shelter. But the shelter was full so in desperation the owner shoved them out of his car and left them on the side of a road. At the last minute we were alerted to the situation, and instantly swung into action to try and find them. We made after call, desperately trying to find out where the dogs had been left. All we knew from a family member was a very broad area near major highways. With our hearts in our throats thinking of these two youngsters -- out there alone in the dark, in a strange area, scared and confused after being forced out of the car and left behind -- it was all we could do not to cry. We marshalled our volunteers and fellow rescuers, and with the help of one of the family members were able to get hold of both dogs. Whew -- and thank heavens! But in just the space of the 8+ hours Sheba and Rico were out, the bottoms of their paws had become degloved -- indicating that in their panic they had desperately tried to follow their owner's car and get home again.
PERSONALITY
Sheba is super loving and wants you to love on her and pay attention to her. She and Rico are in boarding for the mment (due to lack of available foster homes) and she's adapted pretty well but isn't crazy about boarding. She's a little less confident than her brother Rico -- he's a big goof who will readily greet you at his kennel door and is excited, where Sheba wants to be excited but is still confused and a little uncertain when we come to her kennel. She doesn't like being separated from Rico and is just as exuberant and goofy and playful as he is once they're together. She's young and full of energy, and is going to be a lover. We suspect she'll be a lap dog if allowed!
of love, a happy smile all the time, and a zest for life. He loves to play ball but isn't obsessive about it and will happily stop after a while to be with you. He's very attached to his sister Sheba and tends to follow her around. Like Rico, she knows the "sit" command and is starting to learn to wait at doors, but needs to learn everything else. Her leash manners are improving (we don't think they were ever taken on walks) but still need more work. HOUSE MANNERS: Since she's in boarding,we haven't seen her in a home setting and are unsure how good her house manners are. She may or may not do things like chew, get into trash, jump on counters or grab food, etc., and her new family will need to set boundaries and rules, then enforce them.
PEOPLE
Sheba adores people and just wants to be with you once she gets past her initial "what the heck has happened to my life" thing. She will bond hard to her new family as she settles in, and will be eager to please you. She already has started looking to us for direction even in the boarding setting, which is a good sign that she is very trainable and responsive. She's been in boarding for the short time he's been with us so we haven't seen him in a home setting, but aside from some initial confusion and backing away when you first enter her kennel, she's welcomed everyone she's met. KIDS: because she's been in boarding we haven't seen her around young children yet. We believe she will do well with well-behaved children who know how to respect dogs, and that the only problem will be that of any large, strong dog -- she may knock a small child over in play or just by running into them accidentally. That requires training and supervision on the part of her new family.
OTHER ANIMALS
She's the more dependent of the pair and adores being with her brother Rico. The two are tightly bonded. She seems to get along with all the other dogs she's met and walked with so far, wanting to sniff and be friendly with them. We suspect that, like her brother, her play with other dogs would be fairly rough for now until she learns how to dial it down a bit and be more appropriate and respectful of the other dog's space. She's used to roughhousing with her brother Rico. CATS: she's met several cats in kennels at the boarding facility and although curious, she redirects easily. We believe she is trainable with cats. SMALL ANIMALS: she's interested in squirrels and the like on walks, but not obsessively so. Again we believe she's trainable.
TRAINING
Sheba needs the basics that all GSD youngsters need: clear expectations and rules, with boundaries and leadership that enforces those boundaries. She and her brother Rico both seem to be extremely responsive to our direction and we think they'll be easily trained. They only know one command (sit) and are learning a few others, but they clearly didn't have much/any trainingi previously and this is new to them. They're extremely smart, want to please you, and are food motivated.
MEDICAL
She's a healthy young lady and ready to go home. She's spayed, up to date on shots, been dewormed and is heartworm negative. She has no known health issues.
OVERALL
Like her brother Rico, Sheba is a gem and her new family is going to be v.e.r.y. lucky! She's a sweet girl who is friendly and well-tempered. She's just in need of some confidence-building that will c ome with stability and socialization -- along with guidance, rules, and training. With good leadership, and the chance to mature under that leadership, she's going to blossom into an amazing companion.
DOGS: Yes, she loves to play (plays rough), adores being with her brother
CATS: Initial cat testing shows her to be trainable -- she was easily redirected
KIDS: Unknown. Would have to be tested.
IDEAL FAMILY: An active family with a securely fenced yard, who will provide her (and hopefully her brother Rico) with the exercise and training she needs to become the polished diamond she really is.
