RYDER is an amazing dog with a sunny personality and lots of energy who just wants to enjoy life and play! He's currently in boarding and is sooooo ready to have his very own family!
BACKGROUND: Ryder was a stray found near the County Club Plaza and taken to the shelter by a member of the public, but the shelter suspected that it was really his owner. Ryder was well cared for and friendly, and when no one came to inquire about or reclaim him it seemed odd. It's likely that he was a pandemic puppy who grew too big and the owner hadn't trained him.
TEMPERAMENT: Ryder is one happy dude! See that tongue hanging out? He's always got a grin on his gorgeous face and his tongue hangs out a lot because he has this thing about loving life. He's an enthusiastic guy and adores playing, walking, chasing the ball, and just about any kind of activity you like. He'll be a lap dog if you let him! He's got a lot of energy and needs daily activity, play, and walks. He's a big boy -- stocky and tall -- and very enthusiastic. He's in boarding simply due to lack of qualified foster homes, so we haven't seen him in a home environment. He keeps a clean kennel in boarding so is likely house trained. We don't know if he would chew on things, or get into trash, or other tyical house manner issues. He does not chew up his bedding or other toys in boarding (all tough toys, no soft toys) and we susect he has decent house manners.
PEOPLE: He's loved everyone he's met while in our care, and was the same at the shelter. He doesn't show any of the common GSD barrier reactivity in a kennel. He readily meets new people and thinks they're there to play with him. KIDS: We've only see him around a few kids at occasional events, and he's done just fine. We believe that personality-wise he'd do well and his only issue would likely be his size / strength / enthusiasm. Like any large dog he could easily knock a small child over accidentally in play, and rerquires supervision around them
OTHER ANIMALS: He's good with most other dogs and only occasionally isn't fond of dominant males, but we think that's more about kennel-frustration than anything. He's in play group at the boarding kennel. His play is typical GSD-rough play and can be a little much for some dogs. He needs training and guidance to learn to gentle down some in his play, but he is super smart and learns quickly! He learned to shake right away. Once in a home with good leadership and consistently-enforced rules, we think he'll do great things. He'd love a doggie play buddy of approximately his own size, energy, and play style. SMALL DOGS: we haven't seen him around small dogs and that would have to be tested. SMALL ANIMALS: he's interested in small critters on walks, but not exceptionally so.
TRAINING: Ryder is super smart and trains quickly. He just needs good leadeship with consistent rules and boundaries. He's enthusiastic and energetic, and needs plenty of daily exercise in conjunction with the training. He wants to please you but in his eagerness to have fun he can get carried away and forget to listen. With structure, consistency and leadership he's going to be one magnificent dog as he matures into an adult.
HEALTH: Ryder is neutered, up to date on shots, microchipped, and has been treated for heartworm.
OVERALL: Ryder is an exceptional boy who's so good-natured that you'll fall in love with him quickly. He's absolutely stunning, XL, and super enthusiastic about life. He just wants to have fun, love, and be loved. He needs plenty of activity and consistent training, plus maybe a playmate of roughly his own size and energy level.
WHAT HE NEEDS IN HIS NEW FAMILY: An active family with another dog roughly Ryder's size and energy level who loves to play (and can handle rough play while Ryder learns to gentle down). Must have a securely fenced yard. A family who will exercise him extensively every day, is willing to give him the training he needs and able to provide good canine leadership.
If you're looking for a stunningly handsome, happy, and loving GSD who will bond with you and make you laugh,
RYDER's your man!
RYDER'S ADOPTION FEE: $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
