Foster home update:
Cory is beautiful! But also awkward, a puppy and dopey in the most adorable way! He is a whole lotta dog, but has the best temperament. He's underweight now, but has been eating pretty well for me when he doesn't get distracted - he's easily diverted from things. I would anticipate his energy level to continue to increase as he puts on weight and builds endurance. He needs some guidance on settling down and remembering his manners, but I don't think it will take him very long with consistent work.

He has strong guarding instincts and announces each strange noise, visitor and passerby. He will rush at people with a serious bark if not called back (or more often held back). He doesn't seem aggressive , but there is an implied warning. Someone will need to continue working with him on the appropriate way to greet visitors to his home. The good news is he doesn't jump up! He has a lot of puppy enthusiasm and with his size he can tear through a place. We've been working on indoor manners - he does respect puppy gates. Because of his size and age I would recommend older kids only. He'd love a big yard to romp around in.

He was introduced to the toy poodles and was interested, but with proper introduction he will probably be fine with smaller dogs and possibly cats. I have not introduced him to a cat but his 'his squirrel interest level' seems minor to medium. On a leash he is pretty strong and may need a pinch color or gentle leader and some work, but again I think he won't be too difficult with some time and consistent rules. Out on the trails I tried his extend-a-leash manners and he walks very well with that freedom, no pulling... still needs to learn the tree policy as he's pretty quick to wrap us up! ha!

Cory and Cady have gotten along awesome, he's probably 20 lbs. heavier than her and sometimes plays rough, but she holds her own and they are not at all aggressive towards each other. Cady is constantly trying to entice him into play. He is learning about chew bones, but lets Cady steal them - no food aggression whatsoever. He doesn't seem interested in squeak toys but will play a bit with balls or rope toys - really he prefers to wrestle.

He comes really well when called. While gone, I've crated him in an airline crate with no problem, I've also left him free in 'Cady's room' alone with no problem. Just this afternoon I left them free in the room together and there was amazingly NO destruction or accidents - a first for Cady - though there was still a lot of whimpering. I think she will really miss him when he moves on to his forever home. I don't want to get too optimistic on how he helped with her separation anxiety yet - the first time I left them alone he was crated, she was not and the room was a disaster as usual.

Cory came to MOGS from a kill shelter in Central Missouri. He is quike striking in appearance with his light coloring and faded saddleback. He's good with other dogs and loves to play. Cory loves people and attention. Cory is a big boy, at around 80 lbs, and he's still going to fill out a bit. He needs some training and guidance, but appears house broken and will make a fantastic family dog. He'd love to camp out at your place and love you forever. Email us today for your application!!

More about Cory - Adopted

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
