***Sienna is in boarding due to lack of qualified foster homes and needs a foster or adopter immediately! ***

SIENNA is a gorgeous 4 yr old girl who was confiscated for cruelty after she was found chained, starved – and nursing a littler of 7 puppies lliving in a woodpile.  They were all filled with worms and fleas.  We promised Sienna we’d find her THE BEST forever family and home any dog has ever had!  Is that YOU?

BACKGROUND
Officials got a report that Sienna had no food, water or shelter from the cold, and  impounded her and her 7 puppies.  Sienna wasn't much more than a bone but somehow was keeping 7 puppies alive and trying to nurse them.  The owners were known to have dogs come and go like old sweaters, but Sienna had been there a while and they had chained her up.  Her 3 week old puppies were living in a nearby woodpile – out in the snow, freezing rain, and winter cold. The whole family had horrible diarrhea from massive worm infections and were crawling with fleas.  Sienna was starved to the bone and heartworm positive.   Sadly, officials left another dog with the owner and we pray for him every day.

PERSONALITY
Sienna was fiercely protective of her puppies but we only saw her true personality after her pups were adopted and gone.  She hadn’t wanted any strangers around her pups and bonded tightly to her foster mom.  But after the litter was adopted Sienna had to go into boarding (due to the foster mom’s changing schedule) -- and we saw a different dog!   She's playful, joyful, knows she's in safe hands, and even has a favorite stuffed toy she likes to suck on ;-)

She loves humans and eagerly seeks attention --  she’s loving, affectionate, loves to be petted and get belly rubs.  We think she could even become a lap dog given half a chance.  She eagerly greets everyone who comes up to her kennel as if to ask “Are you here to take me for a walk?  A belly rub?  Please?”.

We haven’t seen her in a real home as a lady on her own, without pups, but we suspect she’ll adjust quickly to the good life.  She keeps a clean kennel in boarding, and because she was an outdoor dog before she may need to learn about comfy dog beds, toys and the like. We don’t know if she’d try to explore the trash can or chew up a toy, but she kennels well and is a fast learner.

She just needs a family to show her the comfort of being an indoor life, and the rules that go with it.  In all other ways she’s a true GSD – she’s a strong lady (which is how she survived the cruelty) and used to doing things her way but is learning new boundaries every day.

OTHER ANIMALS
This is her only issue to date.  She’s reactive to other dogs and needs to be an only pet for now. We’ve been working with her with frequent walks to expose her to other dogs and  start reducing her reactivity, and she has shown some improvement.  Once in a home where walks can be regularly scheduled and real training can begin, we think she'll continue to improve.  She has a prey drive and loves to chase small critters like squirrels, probably a result of being starved for so long, but that is also improving.  She's both very smart and very food motivated, which will make her continued training easier. We have not been able to test her around cats yet.

PEOPLE / KIDS
She loves humans and is so eager for attention that it breaks your heart.  We currently recommend a home with older kids or an adults-only homes.  We don’t think she would do anything negative around small kids but we haven’t seen her in that environment, and given her background as an outdoor dog and a cruelty victim we recommend no small kids.

HEALTH
Overall she's in good health and ready to go home -- spayed, up to date on shots, and on monthly heartworm preventives.  She's being treated for heartworm.

NEW FAMILY
A home with a securely fenced yard and a fairly active family who will play with her, take her for walks, expose her to the big, wide world, and continue her training  We’d love to see her new family continue our work and possibly even work with a trainer to reduce her dog reactivity and help her get along with them.

SUMMARY
Sienna is a true beauty in both looks and personality.  She loves being outdoors with you and MUST have a securely fenced yard.  She needs to be an only pet for now – and after being severely neglected and starved she deserves all the attention that brings!  She loves getting out and walking and playing so would love a family that’s at least moderately active.  She also needs a family who will understand and work with her on her dog reactivity, help her change / reduce that, and show her the big, wide world out there.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, deserving, happy,
trainable German Shepherd

who will love you forever,
Sienna may be your ideal family member!

SIENNA'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
