MALLA is a gorgeous, classic black-and-tan girl with a hint of red in her coat.  And she’s now interviewing families to see who she’ll live with for the rest of her life!

BACKGROUND
Malla’s owner was deported and his ex-wife didn’t want her so just dropped her at a shelter without so much as a backwards glance.  Malla was clearly not used to being kenneled and hated being in the shelter.  Unfortunately we had no choice but to put her in boarding due to lack of qualified foster homes, and she hated that too.  She was craving being in a home again.  She’s now in a wonderful foster home and much more relaxed.

PERSONALITY
Malla loves people, craves affection, and is definitely a cuddler.  She just wants to be around you!  She’s friendly with everyone she’s met to date and doesn’t seem to have any preference as to men or women.  We haven’t seen her around small kids yet and would have to test that, but we don’t anticipate a problem.  She seems to crave human affection and attention.  Everyone who meets her falls in love with her because of her sweetness to people.  She has a good energy level but is past the crazy-puppy stage.  She does well in the house, is house trained, and overall has good house manners.

PEOPLE / KIDS
She loves people and although she still needs to be assessed around small kids, we don’t anticipate a problem.  She has not shown any aggression to people to date.

OTHER ANIMALS
This is the one area where Malla needs continued work.  She initially was very dog-reactive and it quickly became clear to us that her prior owner had kept Malla in the house and yard – but never had her on leash, never took her for walks, never exposed her to other dogs, never took her anywhere outside that little world.  The result is that Malla was totally unfamiliar with other dogs and reacted out of unfamiliarity combined with fear of the unfamiliar.  But she can move past this -- she lived with a trainer for two weeks and started to acclimate to a large male GSD and a small male Bichon.  She made enough progress in two weeks that she could calmly lay in the same room with the others without a muzzle, sleep in the same room, go through doorways.   She was supervised as she wasn’t ready yet to be around the other dogs by herself.  She even plays briefly with the GSD in the yard, but becomes frightened when he turns to chase her -- because she doesn't yet understand how to play, or even what play really is.  Malla needs to either be an only pet, OR she needs to have a family of good leaders who continue her socialization and training with other dogs.  We are happy to provide guidance and suggestions to her new family on this, and in fact we think she would ultimately enjoy the company of another dog once she is educated and socialized.

TRAINING
Malla spent several weeks in the home of a trainer and did extremely well.  She responds very well to correction (she wants to please you) and needs structure / ground rules when it comes to other dogs (never had that).

HEALTH
In good health and ready to go home -- spayed, up to date on shots, and on monthly heartworm preventives.

FAMILY

A moderately active family who likes to give lots of attention and belly rubs.  Either (1) an only pet family, or (2) a family with another mellow dog and strong human leaders who are both willing and able to continue and finish her training around other dogs.

SUMMARY
Malla is a gorgeous girl who steals your heart pretty fast, and her only “mistake” was having an owner who never took her outside the house and yard.  So she’s now learning about the big wide world out there – and in particular about other dogs.  She’s not natively aggressive to other dogs but reacts out of fear of the unfamiliar, and she’s shown she can move past that with leadership and socialization.  Overall she's a precious cuddler who’s well worth the time and training!

MALLA'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350

This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Malla

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
