SNOWBALL is a gorgeous, almost-4-year-old lady who is a joy – and has oodles of love she’s just waiting to give you.  She’s a terrific companion and a lover.

BACKGROUND
Snow landed in a shelter at 3 years old after being passed around from owner to owner.  No one trained her, educated her or taught her.  She was just a pretty furry accessory they threw away after a few months.  Her last owner kept her just 4 months before dumping her at a shelter, saying they couldn't afford her and that she was too aggressive with their cats.  We pulled her out of the shelter and into a foster home where she thrived.  She was then adopted by a loving couple with a very high energy GSD, and it’s proven to be something of a mismatch in energy and play levels. So now she’s looking for a forever home with someone who’s home most of the time, is moderately active, and has either a low-to-moderate energy dog buddy or no other pets.

PERSONALITY
She is both a lover and a protector.  She ADORES her own people and being loved on by strangers when out and about.  She’s very friendly, and at the same time takes a don’t-mess-with-my-yard attitude toward strangers who come in her yard without proper introductions.  She's very content as long as her people are nearby, and is more than happy to lay down by your feet and chew on a bone while watching TV. She’ll follow you from room to room to be sure you’re okay, all is well, and you’re not too far away.  She’ll wait at the door for you, whether it’s the bathroom door or the front door.  She’s a terrific “hang out with us” dog, and also loves outings in the yard and enjoys her walks.  Snow is a laid back lady with occasional sparks of energy. Filled bones (Dentley) and soft toys that squeak are her very favorite. She loves to go on car rides with the window down. She will go for a walk with you, but really would prefer if it was just a short outing or if she could just wander around the yard with her people.

HOUSE MANNERS
Good in the house.  House trained.  Crate trained but hasn’t been in her kennel for some months because she is not destructive in the house.  When left alone for long periods of time, 10 hrs or so, she will occasionally have an accident.

PEOPLE
Snow LOVES people and, like many GSDs, will bond hard with you and be your shadow.  She wants to be where you are, and that tendency only increased during the pandemic when her mom worked from home.  Now that both her mom and dad are gone all day for up to 10 hours, she’s having a bit of a hard time with that.  Her ideal family would be someone who works from home, is retired, etc. – with at least one person home a lot.  She’s great with meeting new people, too, especially when out and about in public -- she loves it when people want to stop and pet her while on a walk. If people come to the house, it’s best to introduce them inside the house or out front first -- like a true GSD, Snow is sometimes protective of her back yard if that’s where she first meets a new person.   CHILDREN:  she hasn’t been exposed to a lot of kids in her current home (no children in the home).  When kids visit, she’s excited to meet them and would do best being supervised around them just due to her size and strength.  She also likes snacks, so the food that little hands tend to carry around would likely be a tempting snack to her ;-)

OTHER ANIMALS
She lives with another female GSD and prior to that was in foster care with a female GSD mix.  She’s gone to the dog park many times with her current humans and has always done well meeting interacting with other dogs. She sometimes struggles to initiate play with them if they don’t initiate it first, which leads to her “mouthing” at their shoulder area (not aggressively). She has always loved playing with other dogs, but would be best with another dog of moderate energy.  When she first came to us she was a bundle of doggie-play-energy, but as she’s matured beyond the puppy stage she prefers hanging out with her humans to long sessions of play with her doggie buds.  She has bursts of energy but in general prefers a more sedate life and play style.  CATS:  we haven’t seen her around cats and would have to be tested.  She does have a strong prey drive and we suspect her desire to chase would be strong.

TRAINING
Snow is a smart girl who went from no training for the first two years of her life to being a nicely-behaved girl.  She will quickly pick up on her new family’s rules and gladly follow them as long as she’s with you.

HEALTH
Spayed, up to date on shots, microchipped, on monthly preventives, heartworm negative.  Takes Gabepentin and joint supplements for arthritis, and does fine.

SUMMARY
A terrific companion for a family who is looking for a moderate energy lovebug and doesn’t mind her being your shadow!  Would love a fenced in yard for ambling around, and a relatively low-key dog buddy. Only one lucky family is going to add this stunning girl to their family and be loved by her!  Is that YOU?  Do you want a companion who doesn’t demand a ton of exercise or entertainment, who just wants to hang out with you, be with you?  Apply today!

SNOWBALL's'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Snowball (NOW Luna)

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
