ZEUS
is a gorgeous 6 yr old guy with Charlie-Chaplin-eyebrows and an adorable butt-swagger when he trots!  He's one of those guys who makes you smile just being around him. He's currently in boarding, and sits and looks at you so patiently from his kennel run while he waits his turn for a walk.  There's just something about him that makes you happy.  Don't those those bright brown eyes just say "Let's be happy together"?   Everyone needs a Zeus in their lives!

BACKGROUND
His owner had health issues and family would not step in to help, so Zeus was taken  to a shelter.

TEMPERAMENT
Zues's main things is just to be loved on!  He adores attention, pets, head and ear rugs, and more.  He loves running around the payyard at boarding, going for walks, and playing with our volunteers.  He just generally likes being loved on by everyone he meets, and seems to love life.  He looks at you with a happy face and expectant eyes, as if to say "Ready for a good day today?"

He's a typical GSD-husky -- if you let him get away with stuff, he will.  For instance, if you let him bolt out the door he will, but if you consistently let him know that's not acceptable and teach him to wait until released he does it.  In other words if you set the rules and enforce them, he follows them.  He's smart and learns easily.

He also likes to play (fetch with a ball or bone, tug of war with a rope toy, keep away with his people) but isn't obsessive about it.  He loves his bone and extra strong Kong filled with peanut butter, adores going on walks, and loves to wander around the playyard and sniff.  He has a nice medium energy level -- lots of spunk but past the crazy-puppy-energy stage.

He was reported to be fully housebroken and it appears he is (keeps a very clean kennel in boarding).  He was also reported to resource guard his food around other dogs (not humans) and was always fed separately from the other dogs in the home.  We haven't seen this issue since he's always fed in his own kennel run.

He is kennel trained as well.  He was alone in the house for 4-6 hours at a time and was kenneled to keep him from trash-surfing.  He was also said to be an in-home 'escape artist' -- but the owner described that as pushing through gates, furniture, etc. to get where he wanted to go.  We call that more a matter of good leadership that will teach him not to do those things, and we've seen the evidence that he does respond to consistency and firmness on rules.  For instance, he instinctively wants to bolt out of his boarding kennel at walk time but volunteers have taught him to sit and wait instead.  We believe what he really needs is boundaries that are consistently and firmly enforced.

He was reported to go to a groomer once a year in hot weather, doesn't like water but will tolerate a bath, and was only brushed by the groomer.  We recommend brushing him once a week.

OTHER ANIMALS
He lived with two other dogs in his former home, and got along well with both. We don't know what gender, size or temperament those dogs were, but we do know that he doesn't much like other large dominant male dogs.  He tested "tolerant" at the shelter, meaning he didn't object to being approached but overall preferred to go his own way. We recommend that any other dog in the home be a submissive personality, and it may be best if it's a female.  His owner had cats
and apparently Zeus even slept with one.  We would want to do introductions to any other animals in the home to be sure it's a good match.

CHILDREN
He lived with a 5-year old in the owner's home with no reported issues.  He also has done well with kids at a few events we had him at.  We will need to introduce him to any children in the home, whether foster or adoptive.  We believe based on the information we have to date, that he will do well with kids who respect him and the only issue is that of being a big, strong dog who could accidentally knock a small chld over in play or eagerness to get to dinner.  We always recommend supervising any large dog around children for this reason.

TRAINING
He knows a few commands such as sit, but sometimes needs encouragement to do them.. He's a smart boy, though, and should be easy to train with consistency and leadership.  He very much wants to please you and wants your approval.  He may have been hit at some point, because he does cringe sometimes when a hand is raised close to him.

MEDICAL
He's current on all shots, neutered, mcircohipped and heartworm negative.  He had a benign mass on his shoulder removed and that is completely resolved.  He does have mild hip dysplasia and arthritis in his right hip but does not show any symptoms.  Treatment is a daily joint supplement such as Gycoflex.

OVERALL
Zeus is the kind of dog who just makes you grin watching him.  He's a happy boy who really wants you to love him -- and he wants to please you.  He's smart and responds well to training.  He's medium energy with good spunk, a big twinkle in his eye and a bounce in his step.  We strongly prefer a home with a 5-6' fenced yard that is secure.

If you're looking for a loving, mature, trainable German Shepherd
with a twinkle in his eye and an adorable butt-wiggle,
ZEUS just might be your new BFF!

ZEUS' ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Zeus

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
