MALCOLM is a fun-loving goofball, black and tan male. He was picked up as a stray by Animal Control, and transferred to MOGS after being left at the shelter, unclaimed by his owners.

TEMPERAMENT

Malcolm is a 3-4 year old, high energy and loving dog. His house manners are quite good other than a strong desire to be right next to his people. He doesn’t try to steal food from counters or tables, but he will make you feel bad for not sharing whatever you're currently eating. He has no problem hanging out in his kennel even though he has excellent manners when left home alone outside the kennel.

His interactions with cats have been good though possibly annoying to the cat. He desprerately wants to play with any and all cats, dogs, and other creatures. He bows, yips, and noses trying to solicit play. He wants to play constantly, but, if he doesn't have someone to play with, he will find a toy and entertain himself until he is tired. When he is excited he spins in circles, sometimes even chasing and catching his own tail!

Malcolm is a bit underweight after a nasty bought with kennel cough, but he is on the mend. Fortunately, he's not a picky eater so getting weight on him isn’t proving difficult. He likewise has not shown any food or toy passiveness around humans or the cats.

This pup is very smart, especially when a treat is involved. He's learning not to bolt through doors, sit and wait for his meals, and has already learned to go in his kennel when asked. This boy would make his furever family an excellent running buddy. His slightly erratic leash manners shape up immediately when his walker begins running. He happily bounds just in front at an easy jog.

OTHER ANIMALS

Malcolm is currently placed in a foster home with both dogs and cats, and has done well with both. He is a very energetic boy, so would really like to have an active home or another dog buddy to play with.

CHILDREN

Malcolm does well with children but, due to his klutzy nature, may knock smaller children over on accident.

MEDICAL

Malcolm has mild dysplasia in both back hips, but is not currently showing clinical symptoms (lameness, limping or stiffness). In fact, he is very active and loves jumping to get at a toy.  He has been preventatively started on omega's and joint supplements, and this will continue to need monitoring by his forever home.

Malcolm is up-to-date on all vaccines, has been neutered, is current on his rabies tag, and is microchipped.

Malcolm has no other known medical issues at this time.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
