About Duffy (in 3.19)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 350.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 6 Years 6 Months (best estimate)
  • Housetrained: No
DUFFY transferred to MOGS from a local shelter after his prior owners "dumped" him as a stray, hoping the shelter would repair his badly broken ankle, and then they planned to re-adopt him, to avoid the vetting costs.

TEMPERAMENT

Duffy was only recently placed in a foster home, so temperament and behavior information is pending. Duffy has anxiety being left alone and can be very vocal about this. He will need a like size play buddy who is ready for some heavy duty playing.

OTHER ANIMALS

Duffy is in a foster home with several other dogs his size and larger. He enjoys playing like a wild-man with two other males, one bigger, one somewhat smaller. He does okay with a larger, dominant female by basically keeping his distance.

Duffy tested as curious, but not intent with cats at the shelter. He was able to be re-directed, without constantly trying to turn back. In field testing, he was intent around the cat, pulling hard towards, and barking at it. When taken out towards an outside feral cat, he was again intent and pulling to get to it, and had to be muscled off to a different direction. Duffy may be trainable with cats, but this would require further testing, including specific to any cats in a potential adoption home.

CHILDREN

Duffy has been around multiple children of all ages with no problems. However, due to his age and energy level, will only be placed in a home with children 10+ years old.

MEDICAL

Duffy had to be treated for a badly broken ankle on his back right leg, and has been discharged from further veterinary care for this issue. Per the orthopedic veterinarian that splinted his ankle, Duffy will have a permanent, intermittent limp due to a 4mm offset at the break site. MOGS has preventatively started Duffy on fish oils and joint supplements, to delay onset of arthritis in his oppositve hip due to compensating for the limp. This condition will need to continue to be monitored by his forever family's vet.

Duffy is up-to-date on all vaccines, has a current rabies tag, has been neutered and is micro-chipped. He has no other known medical issues at this time.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
