About Jonah

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 300.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 9 Years 3 Months (best estimate)
JONAH is a stunning boy who's past the puppy stage but has great energy and a zest for life that's fun to watch!  Watch him having a blast in play group at the training facility ;-)  https://tinyurl.com/Jonah-in-play-group

BACKGROUND
He was picked up as a stray and taken to a local shelter.  No one claimed him and we suspect he was an outdoor 24/7 dog -- he was dirty, his coat was in bad shape, and he was something of a wild man with no manners.  The signs point to his being almost totally ignored by his former ''family.''

TEMPERAMENT
Jonah seems to be loving life and has lots of energy.  He needs a home with an active family and a fenced yard, with daily exercise with mental and physical stimulation.  He's done great with all humans, though we haven't seen him around small kids and that would have to be tested.  He loves attention and enjoys playing with other dogs.  He's typical of many ignored-outdoor-dogs -- he's almost a kid in a candy shop now that he's experiencing love, comfort, food, and freedom.  He'ls going to make some very lucky family a fantastic best-furry-friend.

PEOPLE:
Both in boarding and at the training facility, Jonah has gotten along with everyone.  Because he has not been in a foster home due to lack of people willing to foster, we do not know how protective he may or may not become of your home/yard once he truly settles in.  GSDs can become very prtective, and his new family will need to be aware of that possibility and train/redirect him appropriately if it does develop.

KIDS:
We have not seen Jonah around small children and that would have to be tested.  We do recommend kids 10 and up, simply because of his size.  Any large and energetic dog can easily knocn over a child in play, and Jonah is no exception.

OTHER DOGS:
Jonah does well with most other dogs, but can be dominant.  He would make an excellent only pet, or can live with a dog who is more submissive and allows him to be top dog.  He would enjoy a home with the right doggie buddy to play with.

CATS & SMALL ANIMALS:
Cats and very small dogs / animals are unknown and would have to be tested.   Generally we do not recommend small dogs. He could easily injure a small dog just by accidentally stepping on it or running into it.

TRAINING
Jonah has been professionally trained by our partners at Gentle Dog Training.  You will get one year of their support free, along with an initial session with the trainers and few dog handling tools such a training lead.  This is a $2,700 value!

REQUIREMENTS:

1.  an active family!
2.  a fully fenced yard as he loves to run, stretch his legs and get that energy out
3.  a family who has or is willing to learn good canine leadership skills (not authoritarianism, but true leadership)
5.  older kids (10 yrs and up)

OVERALL:
Jonah is a gorgeous guy who just wants to enjoy life now that he has the chance.  He's good with people and has been professionally trained.  He's still a work in progress in the sense that his training must be maintained by his new family, but he also comes with a full year of free support from GDT to help you transition him to your home and keep up his progress!  Jonah is a wonderful dog emerged from a terrible, neglectful life and wants his own, loving family.

Will YOU be the ones to take him those final steps on his journey?

If you're looking for a handsome, trained and trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
JONAH may be your new BFF!

JONAH'S ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Jonah

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
