SABINE is a stunning bi-color who is experiencing kindness, love, fun and a normal life for the first time in her life.  She's a little like a kid in a candy shop -- and watching her sheer joy in life would make anyone smile!  Her sheer joy at running around a play yard with humans who love her and having plenty to eat, treats and a soft bed, is almost too much for her to comprehend.  She adores being petted and has a plush coat that feels like you’re running your fingers through silk.  She also has uniquely marked hind legs, which add a striking element to her beauty.

BACKGROUND
She came to MOGS along with two other breeding dogs after being seized for cruelty and neglect. They were all underweight, had badly overgrown nails, filthy coats and dry, scaly skin. She spent the first years of her life as a breeding machine, outdoors 24/7 with the other two dogs.  The male was dominant and pushed the females around, and Sabine submitted to him but also let him know she didn’t like it.

TEMPERAMENT
Sabine is a sweet soul who has plenty of love to give!  She doesn’t seem to know a stranger and has a wagging tail to greet everyone. Her favorite activity is cuddling and being next to her people.  She’s an absolute sweetheart with gentle eyes and soft kisses – and wants nothing more than a loving pet and to please her person.

She didn’t have a clue what a “toy” was at first but has started playing with toys and is developing a large ball drive.  She is a bit overweight after her time in boarding, but we are working on conditioning and she has started using the treadmill (see video).

Because she was an outdoor dog, she had no boundaries and no training so did things like jump on you and run right into you.  She has made great progress on this and no longer does these things as much, but she will need continued work with these manners to complete her transition from outdoor neglected dog to indoor loved family member. She is responsive to correction and is very smart, so with consistency and leadership she will quickly learn all the household rules.

She walks nicely on a leash, does not pull, and comes when called.  She is house trained, and does not chew on beds or toys.  She has not shown any food aggression or resource guarding.  She knows ‘sit‘ and ‘come‘, and is working on ‘wait‘ and ‘easy‘ (for treats and walking).  She does not require a crate but will go in one without issue.

She has a good energy level and needs daily exercise, though it's not excessive.  To date, she has not shown any typical GSD protectiveness of her kennel, yard or foster home, though as with any GSD that could develop as she settles into her new home.

OTHER ANIMALS
She needs slow intros to new dogs as she is shy with them, but with proper intros does well.  She lived in a backyard with a submissive female and a dominant male, but she herself is in-between -- a true GSD.  When we first got her she was a little pushy sometimes with new dogs, but what we see now that she is settling and gaining confidence is just that she needs proper introductions.  We do not recommend pairing her with a dominant dog.  We have not seen her around very small dogs and would have to test that.

Cats:  She does okay with cats -- is interested but will call off without issue.
Horses:  She shows interest in horses but will turn away with no issue when called.

She would do great in a home by herself but would also do well in a home with another dog with proper introductions.

CHILDREN
Sabine has been around kids several times with no problem.  She seems to love people, period.  However, because she is a large, powerful dog the challenge with small kids is the same as with any large, powerful dog:  unless supervised, she could easily knock over a child during play or just while running energetically through the house.  She is strong and can sometimes be rambunctious as she celebrates her new life.  Like any dog her size, she must be supervised around small children.

MEDICAL
Sabine is spayed, up to date on shots and monthly preventives, and is healthy.  She has no known medical issues.

If you're looking for a stunning, cuddly, very trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
SABINE may be your diamond-in-the-rough!

SABINE'S ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Sabine

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
