Cole (in 6-2018) needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping him get a new start?

About Cole (in 6-2018)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 300.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black
  • Current Age: 9 Years 8 Months (best estimate)
COLE is a long-legged, elegant fellow who ADORES attention and just wants to be loved -- and to love you back!

He was a stray who landed in a shelter and it's a total mystery why no one ever came looking for this absolute sweetheart of a guy.  If you're looking for a goofy, loving companion and BFF for life, Cole fits that bill to a T!  The shelter originally thought he was 6-7 yrs old, but it fast became apparent he was nowhere near that -- just starved and exhausted from trying to survive.  We estimate him to be 3 yrs old and full of life and love.

TEMPERAMENT
You won't find a more loving, loyal dog than Cole. He's been through a lot - starvation, neglect, hearttworm treatment, etc.   He's in the "boys just want to have fun" category, and he can make you smile just with his warmth and personallity.  He seems to have that charm that makes everyone who meets him fall in love. He has a great smile and craves love.  He seems to get along with all people - men and women, young and old.  We have not seen him around small children yet but believe he will do well (this has to be tested).  He doesn't have any reactivity on leash or at the door.

OTHER ANIMALS
Cole gets along with other dogs very well.  He walked into his foster home (after proper introductions, of course) and immediately got along with the other 2 GSDs in the home.  The resident dogs grumbled and snapped a bit at first because Cole was excited and a little overly-friendly, but within a day or two they were won over by his sweet personality.  In fact, one of the resident dogs is a giant GSD who's 130 lbs and even talle than cole --and Cole actually goes UNDER his foster brother!  It's so funny to watch!  The two of them act like it's just business as usual.

No cats or other small animals like hamsters, etc. for Cole.  We think he probably chased small animals to survive while he was on the streets and while it's vaguely possible he could be trained (we started that training and saw encouraging signs) it would require a firm commitment from his adopter.  We have not had a chance to see him around very small dogs yet and that would have to be tested.

HEALTH
Cole was a hot mess when we took him in -- starved, worn out, heartworm positive, both ears badly infected, down in the back end -- so exhausted from fighting to stay alive that he acted, walked and looked like an old man.  But in fact he's a young man!  Once we got his weight up and he knew he was safe and loved, the young dog in him came right out.  Both ears have been treated, though the infection may occasionally reoccur due to the chronic nature of them.  His back end was diagnosed with a collapsed disk and he will be undergoing and FHO shortly.  We have treated him for heartworm and he recovered very fast.  Ever since we got some good nutrition in him and he knew  he's loved and safe, none of this has slowed him down. He hops right into the car and onto the couch, and contorts himself to go under his even taller GSD foster brother.  So altho he may have a few ongoing items to keep an eye on over the years, he's an active and happy guy who will give his family many years of love and laughter.

OVERALL
Cole is a TREASURE!  It's just that simple.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
