ZOEY came to MOGS as part of a trio of dogs surrendered by their breeder owner, when he lost his home. Zoey was in bad shape when she came to us, with a severe bacterial skin infection, over 70% fur loss, un-spayed, minimal muscle mass, which dropped her back legs under her, and incessant itching with bloody, inflamed sores on her skin. Under the care of a medical foster, she is starting to make a very rapid recovery.
TEMPERAMENT
Zoey is a super sweet and loving senior velcro girl, who loves, loves LOVES getting attention from her people. Despite a life of hardship as a breeder dog, Zoey has a very even temperament, and really wants to please her people. She likes to follow wherever you go, and quickly relaxes once you settle down as well. She is only now beginning to understand what toys are, but still gets confused when they are offered. She is getting better at chasing a ball, but needs a lot of practice about what to do once she gets to it.
Zoey is also working on proper dog boundaries, including not jumping on either people or furniture. She does not have any resource guarding behaviors. Now that her back legs are getting stronger (her foster walks her on stairs every day), she is enjoying learning to sit and lay down on command, as well as safety issues of wait and recall. She is also kennel trained and appears to be housebroken.
OTHER ANIMALS
Zoey lived with several other dogs during her life as a breeder dog, and was reported to do okay overall. However, she was found to be a target of bullying by more dominant dogs. In her foster home, she is living with two other female buddies, and has done well with slow introductions and supervision. Her interactions with cats are unknown, and would need to be evaluated prior to placement in a home with cats.
CHILDREN
Zoey has done well with children at least 8 years old and older. Despite her gentle demeanor, she does not have good awareness of her size and strength, so should not be around children younger than that.
MEDICAL
Zoey was quite ill when she was taken to the vet for her Intake, but the majority of those issues are beginning to show improvement in her foster home. There is some suggestion that she may have allergy issues, but reports are not reliable. As a preventative, Zoey is on a high quality grain-free diet, as well as receiving allergy medicine and coconut oil to help with the severe itching that she is dealing with as a result of a severe bacterial infection.

ZOEY'S ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
