About Rosco | |
|
|
ROSCO was turned into a local shelter at 10 months old because they didn't get him his shots, and as a result he contracted parvo-virus, a condition that is usually fatal in young dogs. The family couldn't afford to take him to a vet and left him at a public shelter. Fortunately, that shelter is unique and has a tiny "parvo ward" that works tirelessly to save parvo victims. He's one of the lucky ones who survived, but only because of the extraordinary dedication and work of shelter staff! PLEASE VACCINATE YOUR PETS -- let's not put any other dog through what Rosco endured!!
TEMPERAMENT
ROSCO is a soft-eared German Shepherd who happens to be a big bundle of puppy-love in a teenage body! He's goofy and fun and loves to horse around, yet he settles well when needed. Everyone who meets him falls in love with him - he's just one of those furballs who warms your heart. He's energetic and needs daily exercise that includes not just walks but intentional playtime (playing fetch, playing with another dog, etc). He still likes to chew things occasionally, like most young dogs, and chewable items need to be kept out of his reach. He adores attention and affection, and will eat it up.
Rosco knows sit, come and kennel, and easily follows these commands. He enjoys walking and does well on a leash, but still pulls and is working on this in his foster home. He has a very high ball drive and loves playing with other dogs and kids. He can be both dominant and submissive but not the extreme of either. He can sometimes become too rough during play, but this is unintentional and easily corrected. He is truly a lover and people pleaser, and learns very quickly.
Rosco does show some anxiety when around large crowds, or lots of other dominant animals, so will not be a candidate for Dog Parks.
OTHER ANIMALS
Rosco currently lives with a GSD puppy and instinctively adjusted his play style to the much-smaller dog. We don't recommend putting him with other dogs who are dominant or alpha, as he's still a GSD and may react to that behavior. He definitely needs a doggie playmate to play with, and help him run off some of his energy. His new family should have a medium or larger dog with similar play energy.
Rosco has a high prey drive for small animals but is fine with cats. He will be curious but if you tell him to leave it he does.
CHILDREN
Rosco is great with people and with kids. He currently lives with younger children (6-8 yrs) in his foster home and adores them. Like any large dog, he could easily knock a small child over by accident if he gets over-excited, and must be supervised when around small kids. He has not shown aggression of any sort to people or kids during his time with MOGS.
MEDICAL
Rosco has no known medical issues at this time
DOGS: YES! Must have another playful dog (on larger side) to rough house and run around with
CATS: Shows curiosity, but can be called off and redirected
KIDS: Yes. Currently lives with children in his foster home. Like any large dog, must be supervised to make sure he doesn't get over-excited and knock a small child over by accident
IDEAL FAMILY: An active family with another playful larger dog and a securely fenced yard!!
ROSCO may be your ideal family member!
ROSCO'S ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on
