ANAKIN is a gorgeous, tall hunk of GSD who loves being loved on!  He'll keep you endlessly entertained with his goofy antics and happy personality.

BACKGROUND:  Anakin was originally a stray in a bad area and came to us at less than a year old.

TEMPERAMENT:  He's a happy boy who seems to just love life, is seriously happy, and is great with people.  At 4 yrs old he's still young and has a good deal of energy.  He's not over-the-top energetic, but does need daily exercise and stimulation (both physical and mental).  He adores the twice daily walks he gets in his foster home.  He loves playing with you and being with you, and he'll gladly snuggle with you on the couch if allowed for loving and attention.  He's still got a lot of goofy puppy in him and loves playing with his toys, loves playing ball, etc.   He doesn't like mail/delivery people and is a good alert dog for the front of your house (most people would take a look at him in the window and run!).   He's house trained, crate trained, and has good house manners.   He knows commands such as sit, stay, down and leave it and can learn many more.

PEOPLE:  He's good with people, friendly with both those he knows and with new people he meets on walks and outings.  He's fine with those who visit his foster home and are "okayed" by his humans.   KIDS:  he's been fine with both adults and kids.  But simply due to his large size and strength, we strongly recommend a home with no kids or older kids, ages approx. 10 and up.

OTHER DOGS:  This is Anakin's one issue:  he must be an only pet.  He's very reactive to other dogs and -- although he's improved a lot thanks to the training and leadership of his fosters -- he is still reactive to other dogs who get close to him.  That's especially true of smaller dogs.  On his twice daily walks, he's fine with dogs who are at a little distance and minding their own business.  However, if a dog gets close to him he will react.  He barks and gets excited when other dogs walk by the house, especially small dogs.  We haven't actually tested him around a cat but he should not be around cats either.  He has a prey drive and likes to chase squirrels and small critters.  HE MUST BE AN ONLY PET.   While he's improved in foster care, he's very happy being an only pet.  We don't know what happened to him in his prior life that made him dislike other dogs so much, but the area where he was found stray was a bad area and it's likely he was either attacked by other dogs, enouraged to fight with other dogs or forced to fight for food..  He has improved and learned better control, but he MUST HAVE A HOME AS AN ONLY PET -- and a famly / leader who will keep him safe from situations where other dogs get close to him.  If his family is highly experienced with dog-to-dog aggression, and are qualified to do consistent, serious training to work with him on dog reactivity, we will consider that..  SMALL DOGS:  he's at his most reactive when the other dog is a small one.  NO small dogs.  CATS:  No.  Prey drive.
MUST HAVES:  AN ONLY PET HOME.  A
SECURELY FENCED YARD.

TRAINING:  Anakin has come a very long way and is responsive to training.  His ongoing issue is his reactivity to other dogs as described above.  He must have a family who understand how to work with this, to continue his training while recognizing that he may never like other dogs close to him.  He was in an adoptive home for two years, then one day went after a small dog passing by.  However, it turned out that the adopter, who lived in an apartment complex, was not exercising him other than an occasional walk.  His energy and frustration had built up to sky-high levels when that incident happened.  He came back to us after that and we're glad -- he's really a good dog who simply doesn't like other dogs, and his adopter was not giving him the exercise he needs.  And now that he's been back with us for a while and is getting the leadership and training he needs, he's doing very well.  For a few weeks he stayed with one of our volunteer trainers and was slowly being acclimated to the two resident dogs (a GSD and a 25# dog) -- to the point where he was out with them under strict supervision (never left alone with them).  He is responsive to training and would be a great dog for an experienced trainer familiar with dog-to-dog aggression.

OVERALL:  Anakin is a wonderful, loving, funny, and adorable guy who also happens to be stunningly handsome.  He's so happy that he's easy to fall in love with!  His one and only issue is that he simply doesn't like other dogs.  He's come a long way in reacting less to other dogs but is still not safe around them.   A family who's willing and able to work long-term with him on his dog reactivity and has other dogs will be considered.  Absent that, he must have an only-pet home.

DOGS:
No.  Must be an only pet.
CATS:
                       No.  Reactive to small animals.
KIDS:
Yes, recommend older kids 12 and up
IDEAL FAMILY:
An active family with a 6' securely fenced yard who only want one pet and are strong canine leaders.  A family who loves a goofy, happy dog buddy and at the same tiem is willing to continue his leadership training when it comes to interactions with other dogs.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, trainable German Shepherd
who's funny and playful,
and who must be an only pet,
ANAKIN may be your new lifetime best buddy!

ANAKIN'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save.  On average we spend over $450 on each dog.  We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then.  We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit.  At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Anakin

Is Not Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

Special Needs: 6 ft securely fenced yard required.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
