About Doug

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 200.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 10 Years (best estimate)
  • Housetrained: Yes
DOUG is a handsome, highly playful, and goofy 3-year old male bi-color who was surrendered to a local shelter for "having too much energy."  And he does have plenty of it!! He's the perfect dog for an active person or family, and would make a wonderful jogging partner, agility dog, disk dog, etc.

TEMPERAMENT
Doug will pretty much keep you grinning with his sheer love of life!  You just can't resist his zest for play and life and affection.  He's an even-tempered, fun-loving kind of guy with a LOT of energy. He has a very high ball and toy drive, loves squeaky toys, and would gladly play fetch every chance he gets.  But he can also settle nicely when he gets his exercise.  He's curious about everything and is always checking out what is going on around him, through windows, across the fence, and outside of his crate/kennel.  Doug doesn't always have a good awareness of his size or strength, and is working hard with his foster to learn how to control himself better. He's super-smart and really wants to please his person, but also has the shepherd stubborn streak - and selective hearing at times. He has very quickly learned basic obedience commands of sit, down, come, wait, leave it and free.  He's a bit of a jumping jack, too -- he can clear a 4 ft fence from a dead standstill.  He's crate-trained and house-trained, and has good oveall house manners -- though he may try to steal food off the counters from time to time!

OTHER ANIMALS
Doug is in foster care with a foster mom who works with boarding and grooming dogs of all sizes daily. He does really well with other dogs, and would love a canine buddy to race around and play with, as long as that dog is not dominant.  He would be best with another dog who isn't as interested in balls and toys as he is.   Doug has a very high small-prey drive and can not be around cats (he once jumped a 4 ft fence to chase a stray cat).

CHILDREN
Doug has been around children and is very loving and playful. However, due to lack of awareness of his size and strength, we prefer a home with kids 12 and up.

MEDICAL
He's in excellent health though does have some minor issues with arthritis in his back legs.  It doesn't effect his energy level or movement. Like any arthritis, it needs to be monitored as he gets older.  He's completely vetted and ready to go home!

OVERALL
Doug is a good boy, high energy, super handsome, and a dog who makes you laugh with his silly play antics.  He does require a strong leader who will continue the work started by his foster mom (rules, boundaries, strong leadership) as he continues to learn how to control his high energy and occasional stubbornness.  He's going to make one very active family a wonderful lifetime BFF!

If you're looking for an active, gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
DOUG may be your best friend ever!

DOUG'S ADOPTION FEE:   $200
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Doug

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
