ROCKY is a an absolutely stunning guy who's been passed around to at least 3 families.  He's smart and sweet and is now looking for a f.o.r.e.v.e.r. family and home that he can call his very own for life!!

Rocky is tall and elegant, and moves like silk.  He's a joy to watch.  He has lived with kids at all of the homes he was in, along with other dogs and even a cat or two.  His first owner was a military family who moved and took their small dog but gave Rocky away to another military family.  That family then had him for about 18 months.  Then they moved, kept their small dogs, and put Rocky on a local swap-and-shop page for $50.  An independent rescuer saw him and quickly paid the $50 to get him safe from the constant pass-around mentality.  She then called us and we took him into our program.  He was adopted to a family with kids and loved the kids, but "kept getting out the front door".  He then roamed the neighborhood, apparently as other dogs there did, but Rocky being big and a GSD and running up to people scared the neighbors, so they returned him rather than correct the front-door-being-open issue.  So Rocky is now officially back with us while we search for a family and home who will truly LOVE him and take care of him.

Rocky was originally made to be an outdoors dog while the small dogs were kept inside.  He was used to roaming and being excluded from indoor life, but is now used to indoor life after the last few years.  He still will rush at strangers in "his" yard, though he never bites and just scares them sometimes.  People who know large dogs and aren't scared of him are fine, but others may misinterpret his running at them.

Rocky's last owner reported he started to get a little 'pushy' with the 17 lb poodle in the last home, though he has lived with small dogs and cats in the previous homes.  When we asked what specifically he was doing, we were told that he (a) would eat the small dog's food, and (b) would run over her in the yard.  Unfortunately, instead of just correcting those behaviors, which would have been easily done, they just separated the dogs.  Rocky also lived with a senior shepherd, a younger shepherd, and a cat in his foster home.

He loves kids and has always lived with them, including in his foster home.  He's loving and sweet to his people and people he knows or is introduced to.  He may 'nose-butt' strangers until satisfied they're ok -- a little bit of typical GSD protective behavior.

Due to a shortage of foster homes and the overwhelming number of dogs coming in, Rocky is currentl in boarding.  Are you interested in fostering?  He would LOVE you forever!

Rocky is house trained and crate trained, though he may try to break out of his crate due to being bumped around so much.  He has very good house manners and knows a number of commands such as sit, wait, etc.  He reportedly did get some actual training at his very first home and it appears that all he needs is consistsency and leadership.

Are you looking for a middle-aged dog who's out of the crazy-puppy stage?  Ready to settle in and play with a great dog?  Able and willing to be a good canine leader?  Please consider ROCKY -- he's rock star quality and will bring light into your life!

DOGS:                    Would love a buddy to play with.  Needs to be medium or large size with a strong play style.  Has lived with small dogs before and could likely do so again with proper leadership
CATS:                     Lived with them in prior homes.  Would need to test with your cat.
KIDS:                     Has always lived with kids in all his homes.
IDEAL FAMILY:      An active family who will simply BE LEADERS and exercise normal care (not leaving the front door open, etc).  A 6 ft fence is STRONGLY PREFERRED.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, smart-as-a-whip, trainable German Shepherd

who will love you forever,
ROCKY may be your ideal family member!

ROCKY's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
