STUNNING BEAUTY ASHLEY is a super-loving working lines girl with a very high energy level.  She's a gorgeous 18-month old sable German Shepherd who was rescued from a puppy mill along with several other GSDs.

Due to Ashley's nature, our board of directors has decided that Ashley can only be adopted out to a working or sporting family that will give her a job, such as Search and Rescue (SAR), tracking, sport dog activities, etc.

TEMPERAMENT
Ashley is a true working lines German Shepherd - this type of GSD is not for the faint of heart! They need a very high level of physical activity and mental stimulation DAILY, no matter what the weather or how tight your schedule is.  Ashley's foster mom spends a lot of time burning off her energy -- 2-3 mile walks/hikes, 2+ hours of ball or flirt pole play, and sometimes an hour or two of treadmill use ... EVERY DAY!  So be prepared for a HIGH ENERGY companion -- and for burnning that energy off every single day.

Ashley is a very high drive girl, and has a quite a ball/frisbee/toy drive!  She will need a very active owner who can give her a job, and/or keep her both mentally and physically challenged and stimulated.  She's eager to play, play, play, and also does a nice job settling down when needed -- provided she's burned off some energy first.  Her favorite thing to do (other than fetching a ball or toy), is to play in some water!  If there's a pool or a pond, she'll get in it.

BACKGROUND
Ashley was seized for neglect and cruelty from a puppy mill, along with 22 other dogs.  They lived in their own feces and urine, in an area where humans couldn't even stay more than 60 seconds before needing fresh air.

Despite this, Ashley is a great dog.   She's learning everything from scratch - basic commands, leash manners, kennel training, and more.  But she's extremely intelligent and learns very quickly.  She will need a strong canine leader who sets AND enforces the rules in the house.

OTHER DOGS
She does really well with other dogs, and is currently in foster care with two other working lines GSDs, a medium sized mix breed, and a small blind senior.  We do not recommend tiny dogs (such as 5 lbs) simply due to her size and energy level.  Ashley loves to play with other dogs, and is learning how to play appropriately.  She can sometimes play a little rough because no one ever taught her any different.  She is being fostered with her sister, now a MOGS Alum, so she's having the time of her life.  Her new family MUST HAVE another active dog for her to play with and learn from.

CATS
She's in foster care with two cats, and she's slowly learning to respect them.  She has to be corrected daily, and reminded not to chase them.  She needs a home where there either are no cats, OR a leader who will continue the training and discipline she's currently getting in her foster home.

PEOPLE
Ashley has displayed protectiveness toward her foster family when others enter the home, and this is being gradually overcome.  So she does have some element of "stranger danger", mostlly due to her lack of any socialization previously, combined with her high drive nature.  She needs a strong leader who will continue to socialize, socialize, socialize her and redirect her protective instincts as is currently being done by the trainer in her foster home.  She is trainable on this, and her new family will need to commit to continuing/completing that training.

HER BEST MATCH
A very active owner who will commit to taking Ashley everywhere possible to expose her to the big, wide world she's missed out on so far in her young life.  An owner who will continue the great training she's started in foster care and give her a job to do.  She'll make a great partner, lake companion, will enjoy daily walks/runs, and just being the center of attention in her forever family's home and hearts.

MEDICAL
No health concerns.

REQUIREMENTS
Ashley must have (1) an active doggie buddy to play with and learn from, (2) a securely fenced yard with a 6 ft fence strongly preferred, (3) a strong canine leader who will commit to giving her the daily stimulation and exercise she needs along with the continued training and socialization she needs, (4) a home that will find a job for her to do:  SAR work, sporting dog participation, tracking/trailing, or similar.

ASHLEY'S ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
