  • Adoption Fee: 250.00
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 11 Years 5 Months (best estimate)
  • Location: 64112
  • Housetrained: Yes
CHARLIE is a sweetheart with personality plus!!!  His sweet, expectant attitude is infectious -- he's a lovebug who will steal your heart from the start.  He's also extremely high energy and will drive you nuts if you're not also a very active person or family!  He's not even 2 yrs old and all puppy - he ADORES playing, people, and life!  His GSD foster sister is patient with him but will correct him when he gets rambunctious, and he takes it with good nature.

Charlie was saved off the streets by a Good Samaritan who tried for weeks to find his owner with no luck, and was about to take him to a pound that was full and euthanizing for space.  So he came to us and we fell in love instantly. He's stunning to look at and just makes you grin with his infectious personality.

He's currently in foster care with kids ranging from newborn to older teenager, and he loves it when they start to play chase.  However, due to his sheer exuberance and energy level, small kids must be supervised to avoid accidents such as being knocked to the ground, etc.  Interestingly, Charlie can also amuse himself with a ball quite nicely - it appears he spent a fair amount of time alone at one point.

Charlie is clearly a WORKING DOG - he needs a job to do!!!  He's lightening fast and you can just see him herding sheep or doing agility!  He's extremely high energy -- wants to play, play, play.  He will settle nicely if you don't play with him, but he's back to full energy in a split second the minute you get up.

He's a great medium size at about 50 lbs and has the most amazing soft coat - He's GORGEOUS and GOOFY!

OTHER DOGS:  Charlie accepted his foster GSD sister without any question and loves her, but reacts strongly at first to strange dogs.   It appears that this reaction is more a desire to play at full speed, but is inappropriate and would start a fight.  He must have strong leadership to curb this tendency and must have gradual introductions and strong supervision while getting to know other dogs.   He adores humans and wants to please you.  A strong, experienced canine leader who works Charlie will redirect his behavior / train him so that he is appropriate with most animals. CATS:  NO cats!   KIDS:  Yes, Charlie loves kids.  Can be a little rough with them but is living with 3 foster children from newborn to teenager.

Charlie will definitely be comething of a "project" dog but he's worth every minute.  Once he's trained and has an outlet for his energy (a job to do), he'll be one of the most incredible dogs around!

Charlie's herding dog heritage shows very clearly -- he has the speed and focus of a border collie or English shepherd, with quick, sharp, concise movements.  He's crazy for exercise, play and play at any time of day or night.  He can settle down when needed, but is definitely a higih energy boy who needs a job to do.  He MUST have either a very active owner or someone who will get him into agility, tracking, flyball, frisbee, dock diving, or a similar structured, regular activity.

Just one super fortunate family is going to have the joy of watcing Charlie grow into a mature dog, of having him join their family forever, of having his love and infectious goofy personality light up their days!  Is that YOU?  Are YOU the very strong canine leader this boy almost died trying to find?

DOGS:    Maybe.  He loves his GSD foster sister, but shows aggressive reactions to strange dogs, often very pronounced.  We believe he's trainable but will require a very strong canine leader
CATS:    Not recommended. It's possible he could be trained by a very strong canine leader, but he is extremely focused on/ interested in the cats
KIDS:     Yes.  In foster care with an older teenager, an 8 yr old, and a newborn.  However, very young kids MUST be supervised around Charlie simply due to his size, youth, and rambunctious play
IDEAL FAMILY:   Active family with at least one other dog of similar energy and compatible size.  MUST HAVE a securely fenced yard with a 6 ft fence. A family willing to complete his training, and to exercise him every day by playing with him and giving him both physical and mental stimulation.  WORKING HOME STRONGLY PREFERRED.

If you're looking for a super-active, adorable young furball
who is trainble and will love you forever,
and are an exceptionally strong canine leader,

CHARLIE may be your ideal family member!

CHARLIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so o

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
