DECEASED.  Nov. 2, 2019.  Fast growing cyst.  :-(

MOCHA is a loving, goofy, strong-minded and active german shepherd who would have made a good working dog.  She's a high-drive dog with high prey drive and is extremely intelligent.  Her energy level is similar to that of a young dog and she loves, loves, loves to play.  She would love a doggie buddy to play with, though it must be a large dog who can play roughly with her, and most likely a male.  Mocha is super loving, often silly (loves to stick her feet in the air and sleep with her belly up), and can steal your heart awfully fast!

Unfortunately Mocha had a tough start.  She was passed around to six different homes in her first 18 months of life, and not one of them taught her anything.  When she came to us, she had developed insecurities and protection behaviors that aren't appropriate - all because she was  confused, uncertain and suffered from a total lack of leadership.

Today, thanks to wonderful foster parents, Mocha is able to go to supervised doggie daycare and interact with other large dogs.  Thanks to a very targeted and concentrated effort, she is now good with new people in situations outside her own home in most cases.  However, she is extremely protective of what she considers "her" territory, and reacts strongly to the presence of strangers in her home/yard/territory.  She also sometimes takes a dislike to certain individuals in her home.  While we believe the intense program of socialization her foster parents are putting her though will alleviate most of her behavior, Mocha will ALWAYS be an intense German Shepherd who requires a handler who is very experienced with strong minded, high drive, protective GSDs.

Mocha needs regular (daily) strenuous exercise, an activity/job to do, leadership, structure, consistency and LOTS of love.  She's a loving and wonderful girl who is also a serious German Shepherd -- and requires a serious, committed, strong and very aware owner who is experienced with serious German Shepherds and their sometimes inappropriate protective behaviors.  She is definitely a "project" dog.  Her new family MUST be experienced in dealing with true German Shepherd traits, and MUST continue to provide the structure, training, discipline, and socialization she is currently getting.

We do not recommend her around small animals.  She has a very high prey drive and will jump fences in order to chase small animals.

If you're an extremely strong canine leader, and if you have experience with strong-willed, high drive German Shepherds, Mocha could be the light of your life!  She will adore you, bond to you tightly, and be your best buddy for life!

OTHER DOGS:   good with other large dogs.  Best to live with a non-alpha male dog.  Recommend a doggie buddy as she loves to play, but needs to be (a) a large dog, and (b) a male.  Mocha likes to be "the boss"!  She does go to doggie daycare and under supervision does fine with other dogs her size.
CATS:                not recommended
KIDS:                18 and up
IDEAL HOME:    An active, committed home with handlers who are both (a) extremely strong canine leaders, and (b) experienced dealing with high drive, high prey, high protection German Shepherds.   Everyone in the household must exercise strong, loving leadership and be willing/able to provide the continued excercise, training, leadership, socialization, structure and discipline Mocha needs.
FENCING:          must have a securely fenced yard with a 6 ft fence, preferably a privacy fence.

If you're looking for an active, intelligent German Shepherd,
are a strong canine leader,
and are experienced with high-drive, high-protection GSDs,
MOCHA may be your forver buddy!!

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
