LOCATION:  Kansas City area
AGE:              6 years
TEMPERAMENT:  loves people, lived with small kids, needs training with other dogs and proper introduction

BABY is a beautiful classic black and tan GSD who's had a rough time lately.  Her first family abandoned her when they moved out after more than 5 years.  Kind neighbors fed her, then a man took her but now he has lost his home.  So Baby was living once again in an abandoned yard when we stepped in to save her.

BABY loves people and is great when introduced to strangers.  She has normal GSD barking behavior if a stranger comes into her yard unaccompanied.  In addition she seems fine with children, as the last owner's small grandchildren spent time around her and she was fine with them.

BABY seems to LOVE all humans (including the ones who abandoned her without looking back)!  She's a cuddle bug and follows you around.  She has almost perfect house manners - stays behind a baby gate without even trying to jump, is very much house trained, is getting used to a crate and adjusting very well to it.  She is also great in a backyard with a 4 ft. fence and makes no effort to get out.

BABY's single challenge is with other dogs.  She never spent any time around other dogs so doesn't know how to act quite yet.  At first it was thought she was very dog aggressive.  But in a new foster home with other German Shepherds, she started play bowing within two days.  She is currently being kept on muzzle during play simply because she doesn't yet have a good sense of the boundaries of play.  But she is making rapid progress and the foster home thinks she'll be off muzzle even for play within a week or two.  We are working with her on being in among strange dogs.  She responds well to correction and a water bottle, and seems to want to please her humans.  We think she'll be easily trained to live with other dogs, but would recommend that she live only with another submissive dog and probably a medium or large dog.  Cats are unknown and would have to be tested.

BABY is learning what a leash is all about and will do fine with continued training.

BABY is a people-lover and will make a great family dog when she gets into a loving home.

BABY'S ADOPTION FEE:  $300.  This fee covers only a small portion of what we spend on pulling, vetting, boarding and caring for the dogs we save.  It includes spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo and bordatella vaccinations, deworming, microchip, and flea/tick treatment.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
