EVIE is a beautiful 8 month old GSD who's going to be some lucky family's pride and joy!   And not just because she's gorgeous, but also because she's one smart cookie!  Even with her head in a cone while she recovered from demodectic mange (non-contagious), she constantly watched the other foster dogs to see what they did, and what her foster mom would allow.  She's so much fun to watch as she takes it all in and tries to make sense of the "new rules" in her life!

Evie's safe and doing great now, after a sad start.  Her owners abandoned her at a shelter on Christmas Eve, saying "too much trouble and money".  Poor Evie looked horrible -- stinky, filthy dirty, terrified, and the entire right side of her neck hugely swollen.  It looked like she had a grapefruit in her neck.   The vet first thought she had a tumor but aspirated the swollen area and found only blood, no infected matter.  It turned out Evie had been diagnosed with non-contagious mange in early September and was never properly treated.  She scratched herself so long and hard that she developed several gigantic blood blisters internally.

After treatment and lots of love in her foster home, her neck went back down to normal size and began healing well.  The itching subsided and now she's working on regrowing the hair on her neck.  She wore several different types of "cones" at first, in an effort to keep her from scratching.  And she was a dream patient during that time - she patiently stood still when we changed each of her cones and never once complained!

Evie is very loving and would be a lap dog if she could.  She loves being with her humans and constantly checks to see where her foster mom is.  That will change as she gets more used to her new surroundings, but she clearly loves being loved and wants to be near her humans.  She often chooses to be inside with you while the other dogs are outdoors.  And while you're working, Evie is very good about curling up on a dog bed and chewing on a toy or taking a nap.  We've been impressed by what a nice sweetheart she is!

She's also a very typical young, untrained GSD -- energetic, adorable, funny, goofy, loving and at the same time a little stubborn, headstrong and possessive.  She still chews on stuff (including shoes if you leave them around) and has no leash manners (we'll work on that as the weather permits).  She doesn't seem to have been introduced to many other dogs in her life and needs slow introductions.  But once she gets to know them, she just wants to play.  With more exposure, she'll be just fine. She has lots of energy and sometimes bugs the other dogs, who then correct her.  She takes it all in stride and is learning like any GSD her age.  She's not hyperactive, and settles down nicely much of the time.  Outdoors she romps, runs, and loves to play with the other dogs.  Indoors is much the same, though she's a little possessive of her food and sometimes the space near her humans if space is tight.  Both of those have improved greatly with guidance and correction, and will continue to improve.

Overall, Evie corrects easily and will be easily trained.  With consistency and leadership we expect her to overcome those tendencies quickly.

There are some minor indicators that she may have been treated with a less-than-loving hand sometimes.  If you call her in a happy voice and clap your hands, she backs up and goes the other direction.  That indicates she may have been called only when she was in trouble or her owners were mad at her.  She's slowly learning from her fellow foster dogs what things are good and what things aren't.

Evie loves to chew on bones and antlers, and we recommend a good supply of tough toys.    She's crate trained and house trained, and is learning to sit and wait for her meals and treats.

Whoever gets this little girl will be entertained and loved, loved, loved!

Are YOU the fortunate family who will make Evie your very own Christmas blessing?  It's only fitting that her new life has started at a season of renewal and love -- and she'll bless you with all the love, joy and loyal companionship you could ever hope for!

DOGS:
Yes.  Would love a doggie buddy.  Still needs to learn to share, however, and might be best with a non-dominant buddy.  We still have much to learn about her once her cone / collar comes off!  NOTE:  we have not seen her around small dogs as the foster home only has large dogs, so small dogs would have to be tested
CATS:
Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS:
Have not seen her around kids but expect she'll be great.  Only issue would be the same as with any large, rambunctious and untrained dog - the possibility of knocking over children in play, or jumping on them in excitement and knocking them down.  MUST BE SUPERVISED AROUND SMALL CHILDREN FOR THAT REASON.
IDEAL FAMILY:
An active family with a securely fenced yard and the commitment to training her.  A family willing and able to move with her through the puppy stages for the next 1-2 years, and be completely consistent in their training.

If you're looking for a gorgeous young, trainable German Shepherd

who's smart as a whip and looking for love,
EVIE may be your BFF!

EVIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $350

This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save.  On average we spend over $450 on each dog.  We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then.  We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit.  At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Evie (12-14)

Good with Dogs

Special Needs: Has demodectic mange, which is non-contagious. Will be on medications for it until Jan. 25 2015

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
