About Richie

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 350.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 5 Years 6 Months (best estimate)
RICHIE is a young, energetic and super friendly boy who just wants to enjoy life -- with a forever family of his very own!  Is that YOU?

BACKGROUND
Stray in the 'hood and ended up at the shelter.  A "Pandemic Pup', a victim of someone who thought it would be cool to get a GSD puppy, but then dumped him when he got bigger and wasn't a cute little fluffball anymore (actually required time, attention, and work/training).

PERSONALITY
Richie is a goofy young man who loves life, loves people, loves other dogs, loves to play.  He pretty much wakes up each day expecting it to be another great day, and you almost have to smile at his cheerfulness.  He is an active dog, full of energy, and loves, loves, loves to play in the yard. He's an excellent car rider and loves to go on rides.  He also loves the water and has been known to jump off the dock into the lake when at his foster family's lake house.  he's active with lots of energy and would like an active family who will spend time playing with him, walking, hiking, etc.  He likes to bark at things in the front when he's in the backyard, and started some digging in the yard which the fosters are working on correcting.  He would LOVE a doggie buddy to play and pal around with, so we require that his new family have at least one other dog of roughly Richie's size and play style.  Overall, Richie is a friendly, cheerful dog who seems to take joy in just about everything in life!

PEOPLE
Loves people and thinks everyone is there to play with him or they're really missing out.  He hasn't shown a single negative reaction to anyone he's met either at the shelter or during his time with us.
KIDS:  he loves the 4 yr & 6 yr old grandkids who frequently visit his foster home. They run and play ball, then the kids love and hug all over him.

OTHER ANIMALS
Dog tested very well at the shelter, and is living with a slightly older female GS mix who he adores playing with (see picture).  His play style is typical of a young GSD - energetic and enthusiastic  He hasn't been officially tested around cats or small dogs, but his foster home has a neighbor cat next door, and Richie has seen itt but doesn’t seem interested.  The same with small prey.

TRAINING
He's a smart dude who's picked up on expectations easily at his foster home.  He's also still young and needs reminders along with a bit of 'finishing school on the basics'. He knows "sit" at the door to be let out, which helps to calm him.  Same with "sit" and "wait" for the ball to be thrown.. He walks fairly well but still  needs some work on leash (getting better but still pulls some), He's a strong dog and continued training to gentle down / calm down is important as he continues to mature.

HEALTH
Neutered, current on all shots, microchipped, heartworm negative, on monthly preventives.  No known health conditions.

OVERALL
Richie is a gem with a great, friendly temperament.  A big goofball who loves life, people, dogs and just about everything in life.  He's a happy dog who's good with kids, loves car rides, likes the water, is crate trained and house trained, is good i the house, and generally makes you smile.  He's also young and still needs good canine leadership and continued training in basics such as leash work.

RICHIE'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
