DUNCAN is an adorable and playful young black shepherd who was unbelievably left tied to an abandoned house and starved!  But now he's gained weight, his coat is gorgeous and shiny, and he's just SO happy.  Whoever adopts Duncan is going to have a lot of fun -- and keep active and fit ;-)

BACKGROUND
"Dunky" was a cruelty seizure who was starved and rail thin.  He  and a smaller dog were found short-chained to the side of an abandoned house with no food, water or shelter.  IHe was 30 lbs underweight when seized, and had skin and fur problems caused by both the malnutrition and a massive flea infestation.

TEMPERAMENT
He is such a very happy dog!  He greets each day with pure joy and the highest expectations of having a great day.  We suspect he's so thrilled to be indoors, fed, loved and cared for that all his cares have disappeared.  He's enthusiastic about everything, from walking to playing to eating.  He's full of energy and needs an active family, along with some basic manners training (we suspect he was an outdoor dog).  But once he's got that he'll be a spectacular buddy for some lucky family.

He's currently in boarding due to lack of qualified foster homes, so we don't know much about him in a home setting but believe he'll do very well.  He tries very hard to keep a clean kennel at boarding and hates to go potty until he's outsside.  He'll likely be a bit of klutz because he's young and full of energy.  He's also very trainable and wants to make you happy.

PEOPLE
Despite the unthinkable cruelty of his original owners, Duncan loves humans!  So far we haven't seen him have a negative reaction to anyone.  He wants love, play, food -- and then some more love, play and food.  We haven't seen him around kids yet but it appears he'll have the same issue all big, energetic dogs do around kids:  he could easily knock one over just with his energy and play.  Once he's trained he'll make an excellent pet.

OTHER ANIMALS
Duncan adores playing with other dogs and is in doggie playgroups at the boarding kennel.  Like most young GSDs he plays hard and fairly rough.  He also adores playing ball but isn't obsessive about it.  He also will try to avoid a fight, which we learned when he was charged by another male in the play group and backed away/tried to hide.

We haven't seen him around small dogs, but he was found tied to a house with a small dog so indications are he could live with smalls.  However, because of his high energy and play, we require that his new family have another dog of approxiately  Dunky's size and energy level to play with.  And a securely fenced yard to play in with his new buddy.  Cats are an unknown at this time and would have to be tested.

MEDICAL
Duncan is healthy and ready to go home!  He's neutered, up to date on shots, and microchipped.

OVERALL
Duncan is a big lovebug who looks forward to each day as if it were the only one that counts -- to be lived fully and with enthusiasm.  He loves people and adores playing with other dogs, and his ideal family will have a doggie playmate of roughly his own size and play style (GSD roughhousing) to spend his days with. He also needs a fenced yard where he can romp and play.  He's young and needs training, but he's got personality galore!

If you're looking for a stunning, energetic, trainable young German Shepherd
who just wants to have a great time every day,
DUNCAN may be your new BFF!

DUNCAN'S ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
