MOGS & Snowy Cliff Dogs -- Sunday February 20th, 2011

Snowy Cliff Dogs

The caller said two nearly hairless, starving dogs were living in her ancient, decrepit  Cliff 1horse stall on the side of steep cliff.

She'd seen the strays running the neighborhood for over 6 months.  They were now emaciated, out in zero degree weather, one had no hair, and they were caught in massive snow storms.

MoGS swung into action.

We worked with a local vet to tranquilize the two - risky with terrified dogs. We got 4 volunteers, slid down 10" of snow on the cliffside, and waited in 5 degree weather for the drugs to take effect.  The dogs bucked and twisted and nipped, but we finally got them both.  Mari, the little black spitz, was woozier, smaller, and handle-able.  But Cliff, her big white German Shepherd boyfriend, was unhappy and let us know it.

Cliff 2We got Mari up the cliffside but Cliff weighed 80 lbs (even emaciated).  He could hardly stand up but fear gave him strength to fight.  We tried pulling him up the hill on a sled.  We tried one of us in front pulling and one behind pushing.  Finally the strongest member of our Recovery Team just went for it and pulled him up the cliff ... only to nearly lose him when Cliff twisted to get away and fell over the side of hill!!

Both dog and man nearly went tumbling down that cliff, but our awesome volunteer is a quick thinker -- he instantly fell backwards into the hillside, pulling Cliff just far enough back onto solid ground to be safe.  Whew.

At the vet's office, we gently bathed our terrified dogs.  The filth ran off them for 20 Cliff 3minutes.  Their hair loss was from massive flea dermatitis and both tested positive for heartworm.  Both dogs were starving, but especially Cliff who was a bag of bones.

Now after three weeks, Mari and Cliff are in a warm kennel together with soft blankets.  It's heartwarming to watch Cliff gently place himself between people and his little girlfriend, still protecting her as he did all those months. Both are slowly learning that humans can be kind but it's going to be a long road. They're being fed special supplements and high quality food in small doses many times a day.  Soon we'll start Cliff on a slow kill heartworm treatment, due to his extreme emaciation.  Mari will undergo regular heartworm treatment.

A tragedy with a happy ending.  Who dumped these dogs?  Why didn't neighbors help them when they first showed up?  How did they get so close to death before someone called for help?

HELPING PETS IN NEED IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY.
The next time you see a stray dog or cat,
STOP AND HELP!!

Jax's story with megaE -- Sunday February 20th, 2011

JAX - sweet 4 yr black GSD with Mega-Esophagus ("megaE")

We got a call from a vet begging us to help sweet, mellow Jax.  He had just been diagnosedJax2 with megaE, a condition in which the muscles at either end of the esophagus don't work.  MegaE dogs must be fed easy-to-swallow food from an upright position (food literally goes down to the stomach by gravity).  Jax's owners didn't want to do that and requested their vet to euthanize him.

We were upset to hear this but not surprised. Some megaE cases are mild and some are severe, but just the mention of megaE often causes owners to panic.  Even a majority of vets don't know much about it,  simply because they don't see much of it.  It's not treatable (no surgery or medicine), but must be managed by the owners.  Feeding dogs from an upright position can seem a little daunting at first, until you get to know the different options and what your dog requires.

When we got the call we got right to work.  We contacted everyone we knew in GSD rescue and megaE rescue.  We talked and researched.  After working hard for 6 weeks to find the right spot for Jax, he is now in his new rescue in Wisconsin!

Jax1He's out of his crate most of the time and loving life.  He has a wonderful temperament, loves other dogs, cats, kids, the world in general.  He will soon go into a fantastic foster home where they aren't afraid of megaE, having seen their own dogs through some serious and little-known conditions.  They're eager to learn about it and get Jax regulated.  Jax is a wonderful and fortunate dog -- a few months ago he was in danger of being euthanized.  Today he has a long and happy life in front of him!

'11 Taylor Made A Success -- Saturday February 12th, 2011

Thanks to everyone who volunteered at Taylor Made.  For the third year in a row, our dogs were some of the best behaved at the event.  Zed and Niles showed marvelously and they smelled lovely.  Thanks to Chris L. for taking the time to bathe them both prior to the event.  Suzanne really worked the crowd with Niles and generated a few leads for him.  We enjoyed seeing adopted dogs Ben, Winnie, Sofie, Neko and Ziggy.

We made $60 in donations this year, which beats last year's total of $53. Thanks to Steph, Danielle, Peg and Micki for the donated treats and Chris C. and her girls for the home made toys.  If anyone sees Jodi of Bassett and Beagle rescue let's remember to thank her once again for doing an excellent job microchipping our dogs.

5 Lucky Dogs Went Home This Weekend!

SISSY, PORTIA, SASSY, JOJO will be enjoying their new homes as of this weekend.
What a wild and crazy weekend!  Two days beforehand we still weren't sure which if any dogs would be adopted this weekend.  And now, at 6:30 pm Sunday night, we happily report after a whirlwind of activity  SISSY, SASSY, PORTIA and JOJO are living it up in their new digs with their new families!

SISSY (renamed LUNA) went home this  morning, has a mom and 3 wonderful young girls to call her own, and will be learning to get along with their cat!

PORTIA (renamed SASHA) has perhaps the most special story of the weekend: her loving foster mom Vicki M drove her all the way from Lincoln NE to the Des Moines IA area to her new home.  Portia's new family have already emailed that despite her intense shyness she's already coming around and doing very well - they're crazy about her. SASSY met her new doggie sister Sadie Saturday afternoon, and after a few growls and I'm-the-boss discussions, Sassy and Sadie went home and spent the afternoon playing nonstop in their big privacy fenced yard!

JOJO and her new dad fell in mutual love on first sight, and her new mom and three darling daughters think she's a very cool dog, too!

Experienced Fosters! -- Monday December 20th, 2010

EXPERIENCED FOSTERS NEEDED FOR SEVERAL CHALLENGING GSD's:  JAKE and SAMPSON, older puppy mill males, need experienced GSD foster homes who will teach them house manners, etc.  BIG BEN and BARON both desperately need out of boarding and into an experienced foster home who knows how to handle and train headstrong young GSD's with no manners and training.  MAC needs a foster home who will potty train him (former chained dog), but he's doing well on all other fronts.
