MAIZIE is a beautiful and healthy plush-coated sable GS lady who's just waiting for someone to show her how great life can be!  She's still a little uncertain about what's happened to her recently, but she's also showing a lot of interest in all the new experiences she's having. She's an absolute lovebug and adores giving and getting affection!

BACKGROUND
Maizie was originally surrendered to MOGS several years ago by an owner who moved and "couldn't take her along" (sadly, the most common excuse people use to dump a furry family member).  At just 18 months old, Maizie was homeless.  They had thrown her outdoors to live in the yard after  she came into heat and "bled on our carpet" -- they didn't bother to spay her or give her shots. just threw her outdoors.

We took her in and adopted her to a lovely young couple who we thought would be very good for her.  Tragically, several years later they contacted us to say she was nippy with their new child.  They said she was still wonderful with everyone else.  What we discovered, though, was that they had not socialized with other people, other dogs, or exposed her to new situations.  They had also not built  the promised fence, so Maizie had never been able to run around or stretch her legs other than daily potty walks.  It breaks our heart to know that Maizie was treated this way by a couple who intended  to love her.

We now have Maizie in boarding (due to lack of qualifed foster homes) and she's making amazing progress!  She's gaining confidence and comfort by being exposed to multiple dogs and people.  She knows several commands like "sit" and "shake", is smart, and responds well to training.

TEMPERAMENT
She's extremely affectionate to her people!  She LOVES belly rubs, LOVES attention, and LOVES her people in general!  She's hungry for affection and someone to play with her.  She's utterly adorable with her big brown eyes, looking to you for direction and love.  Who can resist those eyes??  Everyone who meets her falls in love with her, she's just one of those dogs.

PEOPLE AND OTHER ANIMALS
Maizie ADORES people once she gets to know them, and is getting to the point of being comfortable with new people much faster thanks to the socialization we're giving her.  With her first owner, she was thrown outdoors at 6 months old and left to be alone for a year.  After she came to us and was adopted, her adopters were good to her in the house but didn't socialize her outside of that.  So she's getting quite an education, learning that people are kind and good, and nothing to be afraid of.

She's also doing much better with other dogs, and is even currently in a small dog-daycare group!  Her original owner never introduced her to any other dogs so she lived her first 18 months of life without any dog exposure.  When she was adopted she lived with another dog and did fine.  But now she's getting exposed to lots of other dogs in boarding, and in doggie daycare, and has made huge progress in being comfortable around other dogs.   Cats are unknown and would have to be tested, but originally when we took her in she was actually afraid of cats.

We think with continued socialization and exposure to the big wide world - including new people and animals - she will eventually overcome her reluctance all together.  She just needs a forever family who will help her do that, with patience, love and understanding.

ENERGY LEVEL
She's a moderate energy dog -- peppy and loves walks and play, but as a middle-aged lady is past the crazy-puppy stage.

MEDICAL
Maizie is very healthy.  She's spayed, and up to date on shots and monthly preventives.

OVERALL

Maizie is an adorable, super-affectionate girl who's had a rough time of it.  She's still something of a work in progress, and can be reluctant at first around those she doesn't know.  She needs proper introductions but quickly warms up after that.  She's most reluctant around men but has come a long way on that too.  She can live with another dog who is not dominant or pushy.

DOGS:                  Yes -- needs proper introductions but would enjoy a dog buddy who's  not dominant or pushy.  Has not been tested around small dogs yet.
CATS:                  May be afraid of cats.  Would need to test with potential adopter's cats
KIDS:                  Kids 12 yrs and older.  Young kids not recommended at this time simply because of the prior adopter's reported experience with a 1 yr old child.  However, the original owner said she was fine with kids.
IDEAL FAMILY:     A loving, patient and active family who will take Maizey everywhere and continue the socialization we've started her on for the last several months.  A family who will take her the last leg of her journey to be confident and comfortable with everyone and everything.   A family who will train her and enjoy watching her blossom!  MUST HAVE A SECURELY FENCED YARD.

If you're looking for a super-lover who's smart, trainable and
will love you forever, and are willing to continue her socialization,
MAIZIE may be your dream buddy for life!

MAIZIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so o

More about Maizie

Good with Dogs

Special Needs: None. Just needs patience, love, and continued socialization.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
