SCHATZIE is a GORGEOUS coated German Shepherd who is just beginning her life as a senior lady. You wouldn't know it by looking at her, not a gray hair in sight! Schatzie has a story like so many others we have seen. Purchased from a breeder as an adorable young pup, she grew up in a home where she received no socialization, no training, and no leadership.

Just a couple of weeks shy of her 7th birthday, a concerned neighbor called us for help, because the living conditions in the home had become so poor over the years that they were deemed unfit for her and the homeowner, so she was unable to stay there any longer. With nowhere to go, she was in jeopardy of being euthanized the following week.

When we picked her up late on a weekday evening, and we discovered she was dirty and her long, thick coat was incredibly matted. Within 20 minutes of her rescue, she went to a local pet spa to be brushed and bathed. This was the first time in almost 7 years that she was not only brushed, but bathed as well! It was a wonderfully positive experience for her, and now, she LOVES to be groomed!

Schatzie is doing very well with her experienced foster family.  She is currently living with 4 other dogs (medium to large sized, 2 are GSDs), and cats.  She is crate-trained and house trained to boot! She LOVES to run, to go on walks with her foster siblings, to go for rides in the car, and she could play fetch all day long!  She is over-the-moon when her foster mom and dad surprise her with special treats like deer antlers, toys, or doggie ice-cream!  She'll show her appreciation and thanks by rolling over so they can give her a good belly rub.

Schatzie has not been around many children due to her isolation, but we feel that she would likely be fine living with older children, as long as the children know how to be respectful, and they are always supervised when spending time together.

Despite her age, Schatzie is a high-energy girl who needs exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and well-balanced.  She needs continued socialization to overcome her insecurities and fearfulness, but she really needs an experienced and active family who will get her the exercise she needs, or even give her a job to do!

Are you an active family looking for a beautiful German Shepherd who's past the puppy stage and would love a home with a fenced yard?  A mature dog who has lots of energy, and is ready to join you for lots of fun and activities?

DOGS:   With the right canine leaders, Yes.  She is currently in a foster home with 4 other medium-to-large dogs (2 are GSDs), however, Schatzie has a dominant personality, so strong canine leadership and good supervision are required.
CATS:    Cats are OK with strong canine leaders who will provide good supervision while Schatzie is around them.
KIDS:    Has not been around many children, so we recommend a family with children at a minimum age of 8.
IDEAL FAMILY:  An active family who will exercise and continue to socialize her. Other dogs or cats are OK with strong and experienced canine leaders.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, wonderful German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
SCHATZIE may be your ideal family member!

Schatzie's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
