ZENA is a little gem of a girl!  A high German Shepherd mix who's on the small side, she's a bundle of fun and energy, and absolutely ADORES people.  She's a cuddler who bonds closely to her people, and will snuggle with you any chance she gets.  Zena is bouncy, spirited, high energy and oh-so-loving.  She's a perfect size (45 lbs), beautiful, and has a glorious coat.

She’s also a great little protector -- Zena saved her owners from an intruder who broke into their apartment in the middle of the night!  Zena instantly swung into action.  She blocked the owner’s path, would not allow her to leave the bedroom, raised such a ferocious racket that the intruder left - and yet knew the policeman who came was a ‘good guy’ and laid quietly at his feet.

Sadly, Zena was later surrendered by this family. The family got a new puppy and Zena did not take well to the dog. So Zena came back to MOGS and went into a terrific foster home. We're excited to think the best is yet to come for our little Zena.  We're looking for THE best home ever for her - a family who understands loyalty, love and commitment.  She deserves the best because she IS the best!

As her terrific foster parents say, "Zena has a wonderful spirit, sunny disposition, and a super fun playful personality! She's such a delight - very sweet, smart, fun and affectionate!"

And did we mention she loves kids?  She's lived with young children before and adores them!

Zena currently lives with 4 other dogs and is past much of her dog aggression but continues to be pushy/dominant and always will be.  Her current foster situation is successful solely because her foster parents are excellent canine leaders, astute about dog behavior, and always alert / aware.  So yes, Zena does need to be an only dog.

She needs an active family (a runner would be perfect) with a securely fenced yard.  A 6 ft fence is mandatory and a privacy fence is strongly preferred.  She LOVES nature, nature hikes and walks.  Her foster parents say she's most at peace and relaxed when surrounded by nature - listening to the birds and wind, sniffing the air.   She needs a loving family who will play with her, exercise her, run with her, walk with her, be loyal to her.  A family who is understanding, responsible, smart and will exert STRONG canine leadership around other dogs. A family who will love her spirit/energy/enthusiasm and not toss her aside.  She is loving, loyal, VERY active, protective.

Are YOU the one very lucky family for Zena?  Are YOU the ones to heal her heart and show her  true commitment?  Who will earn her loyalty, play with her, exercise her, and love, love, love her?  Are YOU good canine leaders?  Are YOU the ones to show her that people can be kind and wonderful?

If so, you'll have the most loving, loyal companion ever!

DOGS:                Would be best as an only dog.
CATS:                 Not recommended, but can be done IF you are a strong canine leader
KIDS:                 Yes, loves kids
IDEAL FAMILY:   An active family who will love Zena for who she is, who will give her the leadership she needs, and who will be loyal to her for the rest of her life.  Will do best as the only pet. Secure 6 ft fenced-in yard is required.  Strong canine leadership is mandatory.

If you're looking for 45 lbs of love, loyalty and energy,
... are strong canine leaders and a one-pet family ...
-- AND IF YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT A LIFETIME COMMITMENT MEANS --
ZENA may be the love of your life!

ZENA's ADOPTION FEE:   $200
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Important Information Regarding MOGS Dogs:

  • All MoGS dogs must be inside family pets - We do not adopt dogs to be outdoors dogs.
  • You must put your dog indoors (NOT out in the yard) when you're not home - We've had dogs stolen because they were left outdoors when the owners weren't home!   Privacy fences have been broken into, gates have been opened, thieves have stolen dogs.  One adopted MoGS dog died after the owners left to run errands, left her outdoors, someone opened the gate, and she was hit by a car. NEVER leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  • You are required to make a lifetime commitment to the care, love and safety of your adopted dog.
  • If you're unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment, please do not apply for a dog.
  • Plan for unexpected events and major changes, such as babies, divorce or moving.   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?  If you move?  If you have a child?
  • When you adopt a MoGS dog, you are making a lifetime commitment.   We expect you to keep it.

We spend huge amounts of time, effort and our own money to save these lives.
Our goal is for each dog to have a forever home --
to be forever safe and forever loved.

We do not want any MoGS dog to end up in trouble or at risk ever again.

YOU are the only one who can make that happen.
It's YOUR COMMITMENT to stick by your family member -- no matter what -- that makes that happen.

That's why we're so picky about our adopters!

Is Not Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
