HEIDI is a super sweet and beautiful girl who loves everyone and is now loving life itself!  All she has ever wanted is a stable home and someone to love.  Heidi is about 5 yrs old and is full of energy and zest for life - she ADORES going out for walks, puttering around in the yard, getting up with the family in the morning!  She loves it when the foster's 12 year old granddaughter comes to visit!  Overall Heidi is just an awesome, sweet, loving girl.

Heidi's story is sad.  Her elderly owner went into hospice and no one in the family wanted Heidi.  Most of her fur was gone and she'd been thrown outdoors in winter by family members who didn't want to go over every day to care for her.  We were notified and called the family immediately.  We met them at the vet's office, where they told us they intended to euthanize Heidi that day if the vet visit was "too expensive."  Chills ran down our spine.

Our hearts broke the minute we met Heidi and we instantly agreed to take her into our program.  Most of her fur was missing and she was full of scabs.  The family said she had food allergies and their vet agreed.  We put her on a high quality food and immediately took her to our own vet - who tested her and discovered both bacterial and yeast infections.  She didnt' have food allergies at all.  Poor Heidi had been allowed to suffer for who-knows-how-long due to inadequate care and mis-diagnosis.  Heidi was the victim of terrible living circumstances, too:  the owner's home was filthy and full of black mold.  As a result, Heidi developed skin infections and got ear mites.  Most of her fur was gone and she shook her ears constantly.  And to top it all off, the owner's family threw her outdoors in cold November weather so they wouldn't have to stop by the house to let her out.  This sweet girl - so loving! - was tossed outdoors in winter with no fur and no protection from the weather.  She was desperately trying to protect her hairless body by burrowing into a filthy, torn blanket - her only cover.

Sp sweet Heidi has suffered more than enough for one lifetime - and we're looking for THE best ever lifetime family for her!  She's full of life but not hyper and loving but not obnoxious. She needs a moderately active family - she's very social and loves going places, but also loves being home or out in the yard with her people.

If you're looking for a mature, loving German Shepherd with a great temperament, Heidi will fit well in your family.  Her foster family adore her and say she's an absolute love.  She sleeps at the bottom of the stairs on her bed at night, but the minute she hears her humans stirring in the morning, she comes bouncing upstairs to sit by the bed as if to say, "YAY! Another day!  Are you ready?  I am!"  She's a sweet and loving dog who now feels good, is healthy, has most of her fur back, and seems to love everyone she meets, including other dogs.  Heidi has endured tremendous suffering and never complained, a testament to her gentle personality.

Heidi is currently finishing up the last of the medications for the skin infections that were caused by her terrible living conditions and poor nutrition.

DOGS:             Seems to be fine.  Is in a foster home without other pets, but always does well with other dogs at the vet and on walks.  In addition, we're told that at her ex-owner's house other dogs came to "visit" through holes in the fence and Heidi was fine.
CATS:              Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS:               No kids in the foster home, but Heidi LOVES her foster's 12 yr old granddaughter!  SHe also reportedly did great at the owner's house with grandkids who visited frequently.
IDEAL FAMILY:  a moderately-active, loving, gentle family who will finish up her coat-restoration and love, love, love her forever!

If you're looking for a sweet, mellow, loving German Shepherd
who will bond with you forever,
HEIDI may be your ideal buddy!

HEIDI's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
