CECIL is one of 4 wonderful high german shepherd mix youngsters we recently took in.  They had been at a rural humane society for 3 months, left there by owners who carelessly bred a German Shepherd and a Lab, but couldn't sell the puppies so dumped them to die at taxpayer expense.  The humane society called us only when the puppies were next on the kill list, and thanks to Facebook we were able to get 4 wonderful foster homes with virtually no notice!

All of the pups seem to be the same temperament - sweet, loving, and downright charming!  Cecil is energetic, playful and sweet-tempered.  He's curious, loving and a lover!   He loves to be with you and around you, and seems to be enjoying his first taste of a real home and love to the max.  He wants to please you.  He can be a little shy at first but seems to love everyone (dog and human alike) and be enjoying the heck out of himself for the first time in his life!  Once he gets comfortable, he's a typical young boy - playful, energetic and full of fun.

Cecil is in a foster home with a very sweet Rottweiler, and they hit it off immediately.  They were playing together the first afternoon they met, and while we don't normally recommend this it was clear that Cecil loves other dogs and is fine with them.  He lives in a foster home with older children, who adore him and are showing him th ropes of living with kids.  Like his siblings, he's still adjusting to the whole new world of being loved!

Cecil came to a small adoption event shortly after he arrived, and he did very well considering he's lived his life in a kennel!  He was confused and obviously didn't know what was going on, but he loved meeting the other dogs and in fact they were his anchor in all the human chaos.  He stuck to his foster mom's leg as much as he could, but overall he did very well.  In many ways Cecil is a typical young boy - loving, curious, energetic and fairly adventurous - but he can stll be shy and a bit uncertain in new situations.  He and his siblings simply were never exposed to a normal, loving home or life - and they have a lot to learn.  But like his brothers and sisters, Cecil is soaking it up quickly.  It's fun to see him unfold more every day, and emerge into a normal life as a loved and loving companion!

Cecil looks very similar to his sisters (Marci & Sissy) and is a classic black and tan boy.  His soft ears give him a gentle look that matches his gentle personality, and is downright adorable. Cecil will be one terrific family companion and pet for a family of any type - with or without kids, highly or moderately active.  He would ADORE having another dog and that is strongly preferred (it's his comfort zone, he has always lived with other dogs).  We also prefer a securely fenced yard.

Cecil is doing well with his potty training and is almost completely trained.  He is also crate trained and does very well with it.

DOGS:             YES.  A home with a doggie buddy is strongly preferred!
CATS:              Unknown.  Would have to be tested but we believe will do well
KIDS:              YES.  Has done well around kids at events and similar situations
IDEAL FAMILY:   A family looking for a soft, gentle kiddo to share their love and life FOREVER!  No more being dumped or unwanted, or living in a kennel run!  A family who truly will regard him as a family member and keep her safe and cared for, for life!  A family willing and able to see him through the final part of his emergence into a normal, loving life as a beloved family pet!

If you're looking for an adorable, sweet-tempered, young, trainable furball
who will love you forever,
BLACKIE may be your dream dog!

BLACKIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so o

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
