MAX is a stunning young man who is just looking for love and a warm happy home!  He's one of those dogs who will turn heads as you walk down the street with him.

Despite spending time on the streets as a starving stray, and having been through some degree of abuse, he's got a great temperament - very loving, adores getting belly rubs, head scratches and general affection.

His foster home does not have young children, but Max has done very well with neighborhood children and doesn't seem to have any issues.  It appears the only real issue would be the same as with any large dog - that he could easily knock a small child over in play and would HAVE to be supervised while with small kids.

He also loves to play, play, play with other dogs.  He's still really a big puppy at just 12 to 18 months old - and now that he's got a full belly and a soft place to sleep, he's enjoying life to the fullest!   Max does really well with other dogs, but he's also a true German Shepherd and nobody's fool.  He doesn't start anything but will not permit another dog to pick a fight or start something.  As his foster home says, "He won't start it but he will finish it."  There is a dominant male dog in the foster house who picks fights, and Max will pin him down but never hurts him.  He also calls off immediately when his foster parents call him.

We believe Max is VERY trainable!  He's very responsive to his humans - if the other dog has started a fight and Max ends it, his fosters simply call to Max and he immediately trots right back.  He doesn't hold a grudge!  But he is a true German Shepherd and so would not do well with another dog who is constantly trying to dominate him or push him around.  He loves playing with the other dogs in the home, though, which includes several very young dogs.  He's also gentle and respectful around the ailing 17 year old senior dog in the household.

Max has gotten away from the fosters several times and is easily recalled by them - an excellent trait that also indicates he will respond very well to training.

Cats are unknown but we believe him to be trainable at minimum.  We have not seen him around cats but he did once chase a feral cat down the street - then stopped and returned immediately when called by his foster dad.

He has chewed up a few things but very minimal for a youngster like him.  His foster family tried to crate him but he broke the door of the plastic kennel and they now confine him with baby gates to a small room, and he does well this way.  We believe that he would be ok in a large enough kennel, but it may take a little doing.  He is also working on his potty training and is almost all the way there.  He does occasionally do a small bit of submissive peeing (was likely yelled at or struck in the past), but it is minimal and with time and a gentle, loving home that will disappear.

One of Max's favorite pastimes is to bury his head in your lap!  So if you're looking for a lover, Max is that dog!!!!

Max will be a terrific family dog for one very fortunate family!  Like all German Shepherds, he needs guidance and leadership, and once he has those he will be a truly stunning companion for many, many years!!!  Are YOU the lucky family to have this sweet guy?

DOGS:                  Yes.  Loves to play.  Would not do well with dominant or pushy males who would continually pick fights or try to dominate him
CATS:                   Would have to be tested further, but he seems trainable
KIDS:                   Has done very well with neighborhood kids
IDEAL FAMILY:     An active family who are good leaders and will provide both the love and the canine leadership he needs.   A securely fenced yard is preferred.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
MAX may be your dream dog!

MAX's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Max (11-13)

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
