About Raven (in 7.16) | |
|
RAVEN is a stunningly beautiful, 2 year-old, Sable coated GSD who was VERY badly abused by someone. She came to us from a shelter where she was abandoned, utterly terrified of human beings. She simply shut down when people came near, and had to be carried everywhere: to the vet clinic, to the car, to her foster home.
TEMPERAMENT
Overall, Raven is a very gentle but super-shy girl, who is working hard with her foster to learn that her world is now a safe place. As a result of an extensive trauma history, she still sometimes ducks her head when her foster approaches to pet her, but is slowly showing improvement. She has a tendency to be shy with new people or novel situations - her initial response is to hide under chairs or behind her person, but will warm up quickly and ask for a belly rub.
Raven is super-smart, and super-loving, and she bonds very hard to her person(s). She is crate-trained, and frequently uses her crate for a "safe" place when anxious or confused. However, if she is left in a crate by herself, with no other dogs or her person around, she will sometimes grow anxious and break out. Raven is not destructive when allowed to roam, and can be left free in the home without causing any damage. She has learned to follow basic obedience commands from her foster, but does not necessarily translate those to other people yet. She is working to overcome a history of starvation, but still at times eats a small amount, takes a break, then eats again.
** Raven MUST HAVE A 6' PHYSICAL FENCE THAT IS ABSOLUTELY SECURE - Anxiety and startle responses cause her to be a flight risk and will for some time. She can also jump high, and has nearly cleared the top of a six-foot privacy fence that had some damaged boards.
*** Any family for Raven will also NEED to be willing to keep her on an extended lead line, in a back yard, with ADULT supervision, for an extended period of time, until she is able to bond with, and trust her new people and surroundings.
OTHER ANIMALS
Raven is good with other dogs, and seems to feel calmer with doggy buddy's around. It's a requirement for any adoptive home to have another dog that is both confident and calm, and can help Raven continue to improve her confidence level. She cannot be in a home with cats.
CHILDREN
Due to the noise and chaos, Raven cannot be in a home with young children. Kids 12 and up only, no exceptions.
MEDICAL
Raven has no known medical issues.
IDEAL FAMILY: A patient, loving family who will continue to guide her on her journey to trust and confidence. A family with another dog who will be her play buddy, best friend, and role model. A family who will be gentle and encouraging, and never lose patience with Raven as she works through the final stages of her fear and distrust. A family willing to help her fully blossom into the incredible dog she really is.
